Looking at inside and specs of JA-200 it's actually expensive for the price.
It use cheap heat sinks, and the quality of the parts can't compete at all with the A-300X.

Specs
JA-200 - Freq response 20-20 -0,5dB, A-300X 0-100 - 0,5dB.
I watt output at 1k 0,02% distortion, A-300X 0,005%.
Capacitors JA-200 280,000uF, A-300X 2,725,000uF.
S/N - 100dB, A-300X 119dB.

And the sound of A-300X comes very close to FMA 1811, but what about JA-200?

am audio

..INDEED I can vouch for AM Audio, years ago tried a fabulous pre with a very handy mono gain control, reminding me of my audiopax Model 5,
if only i had the class a amp, i would have kept it..

On the other hand - is the time for such a beast not past?

nah...class A is still best all things considered for the most part, imo. There are exceptions with the uber level class a/b. Circuit design choices of SE Class A, Push Pull Class A or Class A/B aren't the only factors to be considered. It all about implementation and execution of design choices.

I have no idea how the Jungson compares to the big (expensive) boys sonically based on my own observations, but the former US distributor said it was at the level of the Pass XA series sonically (which he also sold). He told me this after I had bought mine used, and had no commercial interest making this claim because he no longer represents the brand - dealing with the Chines was driving him nuts. My repair guy has listened to it in his shop and is the best he has heard (which includes quite a few high end amps).

In terms cost of part and quality of build to price ratio, it is easily the highest value for money piece I have ever owned:

"World renowned audio components, including ELNA 280,000F filter capacitors (Japan), Rubycon & Elon Jenson couple capacitors (Japan & Denmark), Sanken semiconductors (Japan), Motorola semiconductors (US) and Jensen cable (Denmark)
JungSon’s 2,000 VA patented square transformer, 12 mm thick copper/aluminum heat sink plate and gold-coated input and output terminals
Volume control with American Jeff Roland’s electron potential remote control technology"

I can attest the faceplate, chassis and connectors are second to none.

Having said that, it is notoriously unreliable and kept blowing up the power-on switch, and I have replaced a humming transformer, and blown it up once. Without my local magician repair guy (Benny) it would likely have been in the scrap heap at this point.

By the way. I dug up a picture and admit to having a slightly romanticized recollection of the inside of my Jungson. Not quite in the same league as the A-300X..... Oh well.

I hear you.
And I won't bore you with the list of Class A amps I DID have starting with the Accuphase E550, Sugden Masterclass etc..
But they all had to go when I came across the Berning ZH270.
As it is, I switch now between the Berning (now the ZH230) and the Audio Consulting MIPA
http://www.audio-consulting.ch/?Products:Amplifier:MIPA_30_Watt

Recently changed to large batteries, which made the whole thing really worthwhile, except for looks..

berning vs class a any..

sorry for the late response: NO, unfortunately not, that is definitely on my wish list. Has not come my way conveniently ;-)
But i am told, the ZH230 really does it in power with my comparably little Merlins.
(And you know, I haven't got the stomach for larger speakers..I had Audiostatics 10 years ago, that was it. And the Merlins have an uncanny similarity to Planar speakers and are so undemanding in power..)

Got it...its all about the match! If your speakers dont need it...more options on the amplification side. Do pls post if you ever hear the Quad Z monos.

Reminds me of the Mangus MA300 internals. Built like a Panzer tank.

Thanks Lloyd. It bested my old $30K Burmester 911 MK3 in all parameters.

Now THAT is saying something...and they retail for 1/3rd the price!
