Stylus life vs program info on vinyl

I was wondering if the program info on a record has an effect on stylus life. I listen to primarily loud, noisey records. That means there are some big, heavy groove modulations that the needle tracks.

Will these types of groove modulations erode a stylus quicker than, let's say softer, quieter music?

I don't know that you can wear down a diamond listening to loud, noisy records. But if there are large modulations, the stylus could definitely pick up some vinyl (scraping the grooves out??)

Here's what a dirty stylus looks like.

After cleaning, the stylus still looks like it's nice and sharp.

I also don't know if loud, noisy music would stress the suspension more. I've got some recordings where I can see the groove wriggles with the naked eye - Heifetz Shaded Dogs come to mind, especially some of the mono recordings. But with rock, trance, etc. the groove modulations don't seem to be as severe.

What stresses the suspension the most is the act of "dropping" the stylus onto the record :) Something to be said for a nice, damped lift rather than the cartridge dropping like a rock.

Looks like a Sound Smith rebuild.

Remember sombunya, the diamond is a LOT harder than the vinyl. What will damage the diamond is something that is hard and will keep on wearing on the diamond at 33/13 rpm for long periods of time. Therefore, keeping the grooves as clean as possible is a good first step in prolonging stylus life.

Great information here, from everyone. Thank you.

I hear wide estimations on stylus life. And when one figures how far a stylus travels after playing 10 LP records, maybe a mile and a half, there are a lot of amazing dynamics involved.
