Chinese Newspaper Claims iPhone 5S In Early 2013

One Chinese-language newspaper has started this week strong, making some rather bold claims about the future of a few Apple devices that seem pretty tough to believe.

To begin, the Commercial Times is the first to kick off the iPhone 5S rumor season, saying we’ll see a new smartphone much sooner than expected. Joining the new iPhone, according to the newspaper, is the next model iPad, just months after Apple surprised the world by releasing the 4th generation iPad 7 months after the third generation model. Finally, the Commercial Times props up the old rumor concerning the new Apple TV, saying this new Apple product will release around the same time as the aforementioned iOS devices.

The often-wrong DigiTimes has the report, saying Apple is ready to begin trial production of the new iPhone 5S as early as December. This first run will yield 50,000 to 100,000 units. According to these sites, Apple has decided to move ahead in their iPhone 5S plans because the iPhone 5 is suffering from low yields.

Foxconn CEO Terry Gou announced just last week that his factories are having a hard time keeping up, saying: “It’s not easy to make the iPhones. We are falling short of meeting the huge demand,”

While it seems like releasing a new iPhone early to boost production would be the overcorrection to best all overcorrections, this move would keep Apple from lumping their releases into one quarter.

Last month, Apple surprised us all by announcing the 4th generation iPad nearly 7 months after they announced the 3rd generation iPad. This would assumedly place the iPad on an autumnal release cycle, joining the iPhone which moved to a similar cycle last year. Releasing a new iPhone 5S this soon would break the cycle. On the other hand, it could also usher in the type of confusion the company tries to avoid.

The Commercial Times report also claims Apple is planning to release another new version of the iPad in the second quarter of 2013, one quarter after the alleged iPhone 5S. According to the report, Apple wants to push out an assumed iPad mini in this quarter “since the display resolution of its latest version of iPad has come out lower than expected.”

Just as with the iPhone, this move could throw off the entire release cycle of the iPad (or iPad mini) and create even more confusion among customers. This kind of rumor, should it gather any traction, could also dampen holiday sales.

Finally, the DigiTimes and Commercial Times reports claim Apple will also be releasing their fabled Apple TV set during the same time frame as an early iPhone 5S and iPad. While this may not be as hard to believe as a new iPhone in the first quarter of 2013, it does revive some old rumors about the Apple TV. Many have either written off the idea of a standalone television set, believing Apple will choose a set top box or continue to improve their current hockey-puck option. However, those that have held on to the hope that Apple will release this set at some point have been looking for an early 2013 release.

One such holdout, Apple analyst Gene Munster, predicted a December announcement and January ship date back in May. It’s likely that December announcement won’t occur, as many believe last month’s event to be the last of the year for Apple.

The rumours are strengthening, with the same source responsible for the iPhone 5 leaks now posting images of a refreshed and suspected iPhone 5S: source

It looks like it will have the same form factor, and therefore the same sized screen. Different location of screws might point towards a larger capacity battery.

So far, still very early and not corroborated against other sources. Watch this space.
