One correction: the US Sales Mgr for DCS asked me to correct the price. It is $110K, not 135K. Sorry for any misinformation there.

What does this stack consist of? Why 4 separate boxes?

Well since it's only $110K now I can get my checkbook. ;)

Seriously though I applaud a firm pushing the envelope like this with statement pieces.

Now if dCS would make a DAC for $5K with 99% of the sound quality I would be really happy.

Big difference, now it is logically priced

There's too much to put in one box.:D

There is a transport, clock, upsampler and DAC.

Each circuit board needs breathing room!

Wow... now the Scarlatti is just mid-category
Maybe they've heard that Lloyd was not that into it so they decided they had to change his mind!

Hah! Funny you should mention that...i just spoke with a serious heavy-weight audiophile today who owns both Zanden and DCS Scarlatti...and we both agreed. In my system, DCS is probably not for me...my Wilson X1/Grand Slamms are extraordinarily detailed, exacting...but they are also older generation tweeters which can be a bit hard...so a little midrange magic from a Zanden is probably better. But in the right system (his for example...Genesis 1.1s)...the DCS makes its own magic.

I would like to see how this stacks up against an MSB Diamond DAC/Trans stack with the femtosecond galaxy clock. Half the price too...

- Transport
- Upsampler
- Master clock

My way of thinking is if you have to have an outboard clock to make it sound better, then you didn't design the DAC well in the first place!
The MSB clock is smaller than an iPhone and fits nicely inside the chassis. Plus outboard upsampler??? Give me a break....

An outboard clock (DCS) needs to go through a wire/cable interface between two chassis's. It seems to me that the MSB clock approach makes much better engineering sense since the galaxy clock plugs directly into the circuit board next to the dac chips...much shorter electrical/signal path.

My thinking exactly. Wouldn't the clock cable also introduce jitter issues you wouldn't have with a clock physically next to the DAC chip(s)?

I have never.... I say NEVER had an outboard clock improve the sound of a single converter. I've used everythng from a Big Ben to the Antelope Rubidium.

The only time where an outboard clock is warranted is when you are using multiple converters during recording.
