I offer this as a replacement to the W.A.F. thread that was closed because of certain off-color humor.
I expanded the definition to include any house member who shares your income or living space. That includes teens and tots.

I'll kick things off by telling this old story.

Years agoI had a Janis sub-woofer that was not designed to be opened by the user. My stereo was in a locked room and no one was allowed to enter .

While playing some bass heavy music, I heard some rattling sound. I thought I had pushed the speaker too hard and something had let go. It weighed a ton and I had thrown the box away. I told my dealer. His solution was to bring it one day when business was slow. If it was blown I would know it. Therefore it must be some other problem.
I loaded it in my car and we played it at the store. My dealer concluded it's not blown. I would have to pick it up and shake it. Loud cursing ensued. After shaking it a few times my dealer got a tiny saw and removed part of the grill.
There was more cursing and shaking, I turned the speaker in all different directions. Finally it fell out onto the floor. What was it? More cursing. IT WAS A LITTLE RED LEGO!

I went with Maggies for three years because my tots would poke every tweeter in sight.

When I was in Congress, I was stressed out practically 24/7. One time I came into the bedroom after a satisfying 2 hour listening session. I overheard my wife talking to her sister. "He just came back from listening to that hideously expensive stereo of his, he's smiling. I guess it's worth it." I ordered another cartridge the next day.

My now pre-teen kids buy their music using my iTunes account. My Genius recommendations are now filled with recos for Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Glee and some girl who wants to be called Maybe.

At one of the BAAS listening sessions, one of the members, Grellman, told us his tot was allowed into his listening room with his stroller on a restraining leash to keep him away from the equipment.

The child managed to push and stretch the harness anyway to reach his big Rockport speakers and destroy a driver or two. He sent them back to replace the drivers and install upgrades, and we were listening to the newly upgraded speakers.

DIfferent culture and all that ... My father was an early-day audiophile and one thing we children all knew, including family and friends': NO ONE DARES LOOK LET ALONE TOUCH MY DAD"STEREO...
Then I graduated to operating it . When I had mine, the same rules applied to my children: You don't lookk, think and especially touch Dad's Streo system.. You can however touch, think and operate with care the HT system.
It worked.


P.S. One more rule if you like the music you hear from my dad's record you can ask for a R2R copy or a Cassette copy. THose were the reasons of the Nakamichi, tandberg, Pioneer and Yamaha Cassette decks... You don't make my dad ignore you and become an enemy by thinking not even yet voicing that you would like him to loan you one of his LPs or pre-recorded tapes... You may think about asking him for his toothbrush first before you would even think of such ... I miss the old Man!

My first high end speakers were Maggies (MG 2167F - the model that preceded the MG II). I was very happy with them until one day, when my daughter was one, I heard a big thud in the music room. Rushing in, one of the Maggies was lying on the floor - with my daughter (this was in 1980 - she now has a one year old herself), smiling at me - fortunately not from under the speaker. An ad went out the next day and they were replaced by more conventional speakers with a much lower center of gravity.

One time I couldn't open the hatch of one of my receivers, in the spirit of kids and Lego bricks, it was jammed with a crayon.

Sort of equipment related, hearing equipment anyway. Some years back my Mom who was babysitting my then 2 year old niece told me the kiddo was crying and pointing at her ear. I promptly took her to an ENT. Her ear was stuffed with Play Dough. She's gone on to get her double major in Economics and Finance. Musically she's into Death Metal. I always ask her if she's still got some of that Play Dough in there.
