If you have ever wondered why people try to "automate" their home, this is a five minute introduction to it, and an exciting new Mac based system called Savant: http://www.madronadigital.com/Library/PremBuilder Mar-Apr 2012 Article.pdf

This is in a series of articles I have been writing for the construction, design and architecture magazines on technology that relates to homes.

Hope you enjoy it. They are quite challenging in that I only get small amount of space to make sense of a complicated topic. Let me know what you think.

They sell the software+Mac Mini together as a turnkey system. The hardware is necessary as it has other bits such as ports to control your AV devices. So it is more than just a bare Mac.

Once you have that, then you can use any iOS (iPad/iTouch, iPhone, etc) device to control it. Here is more on it: http://www.savantsystems.com/

I don't have the price memorized. Let me find out and will post.
