Wilson XLF and Wilson X-2 Series ll with a view of the new silk dome tweeter

I had the privilege of being invited to the Wilson launch of the new XLF. Once again it remains eye candy with absolute precision in workmanship. Dave gave a summary of his thoughts and how he came about the XLF design with the new silk dome tweeter. You can see how carefully the tweeter is handled. The XLF is on the left and the X-2 Series ll on the right.Information I received was that the XLF is slightly shorter than the X-2 but much deeper thus allowing for more cabinet volume. The XLF is slightly less efficient (0.5-1 Db) than the X-2 which is 95. The crossovers are obviously proprietary but Dave said they are similar to the X-2

A few photos of me and Dave are included

Very interesting diaphragm. Looks like a pure dome but the surrounds have ring radiator looks. If it is, I'm thinking the XLF might have an even wider sweet spot. :)

Well, that's a surprise, I was expecting a look more like your avatar... :D

I'm envious, looks like a great time! Although, Dave looks a lot older than when I last met him, how'd that happen? Even worse, you both have far more hair than I do now... :(

OK, on-topic, how did the sound compare between the two, and to your older model?

Unfortunately it was a static display

Was the new tweeter a development learnt from the Duette?
I appreciate they are different tweeters so definitely not suggesting they are the same, just interesting it uses what seems very similar concept with the surround on the tweeter; possibly for similar results?

Cheers

Oops, I was not clear... I realized after I posted you had said the CES display was static, but didn't you get to hear them later?

I honestly don't know if it is the same tweeter but I am betting not

Oh I agree its definitely a different tweeter, but the concept of the outer guide seems to match and this is interesting as the Duette was meant to be more room benign design.
I can understand why you emphasise they are probably different as some may be negative and compare the XLF to the Duette and IMO this is would be wrong of them to do so, the interest is the concept of that guide and its ongoing development-experience IMO.

Thanks

The new tweet is not the same tweeter as the Duette. However, the XLF is now using the Duette tweeter for the rear tweeter which is different from the X2 S2.

New Video on the XLF:

The Observer and the XLF

From his earliest days as a loudspeaker designer, Dave has been transfixed by this observation: Why don't loudspeakers sound more like live, unampflified music? The Alexandria XLF project was launched as the most unrestrained effort to date to close the distance between live and reproduced sound. Despite the obvious fact that a loudspeaker will ultimately be judged by how it sounds, many designers instinctively devalue listening as an objective design tool. As a result, these loudspeaker designers reject the proven practice of the scientific method.

This latest Wilson video addresses how Dave Wilson refined the art and science of speaker design by using the reliable principles of the scientific method.

I remember back in 2003 I met Dave at Aurant's in SLC and he only had one of these speakers to show, so I'm guessing they were not even ready to go out yet. Actually we could not even listen to them at the time.
