Indeed. That one is unique and really amazing.

But when there is ONE, which really makes the jaw drop even among professional players, because it is simply brilliant, nails you to wall in the first second and it passed test of all time:
it is Jimmy Page:
Whole Lotta Love (with the revolutionary distortion Panel at that time)

Great call on this one.

Mark Knopfler is truly one of the very best 'ax' players around...I would go as far as putting him in the top five or so in the world.

For my tastes in music I could certainly agree with that.

As others have said way to much talent out there.

Most of my picks are with Ronnie Earl.
His solos always seem puurfect and tasteful to me. Its more of the notes he doesn't play, though. ;)

About time his thread to made a comeback. A few nominations...

Siberian Kahtru - Steve Howe
And Your Bird Can Sing - George Harrison
Kid Charlemagne - Larry Carlton

Please forgive my redundancy if I've mentioned them before.

Lotta great ones mentioned. A little off the beaten track:

Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore) -- 'Unmade Bed'. Records much of his stuff through tubes btw

edorr - While i love Prince's soloing on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', i think the guitar on 'Bambi' is incendiary (and the lyrics are hysterical)

I'm a big Dave Edmunds fan and love this killer live version of 'Sabre Dance'

It's usually the live versions. Live Version of Cocaine from 1981 (in the album Just One Night).

My favorite is Jimmy Page on 21st June, 1977, one of the 3 or 4 best days in Zep's History - with White Summer

Also the Stairway live from Earl's Court, 1975 (no, I don't like the studio one), and his various leads in the 22 minute version of Whole Lotta Love, while each not being great, are amazing to show how a guy can keep playing different improvised leads with the Singer.

In My Time of Dying from Earl's court 1975 s also brilliant.

I heard this recommendation before (on WBF), bought the Nude Tokyo tour DVD and much to my dismay found out it was not on it. So I never saw that solo.
