I can think of at least a dozen guitar solos in the rock genre that I enjoy almost equally, and sometimes I waiver between a few. However, for my money, Pink Floyd's COMFORTABLY NUMB is the one song that no one has yet been able to knock of its perch.

Some others that I enjoy, in no specific order are:

Prince - Purple rain
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
Steppenwolf - The Pusher
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Riviera paradise

I'd love to hear your choices, because if I don't have them I might be interested in adding them to my collection.

Jimi Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower

Eric Johnson: Ah Via Musicom

Van Halen: Running with the Devil

The second and third were afterthoughts, the first is an absolute.

There are some short guitar-solo passages at many tracks on Alice in Chains - Live!

Jimi Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower

Eric Johnson: Ah Via Musicom

Van Halen: Running with the Devil

Haha! I agree and in fact had just finished listening to it and Cliffs Of Dover before I started the thread!

Paul Butterfield Blues Band " EAST WEST "
Eric Clapton " Layla"
CSNY "Southern Man" 4 Way Street
Jimi Hendrix.....
Mountain, Leslie West: Theme For An Imaginary Western
Ten years After Alvin Lee "Good Morning Little School Girl"

There are countless others but these were some of my favorites in my high school years. I was lucky enough to see CSNY and Ten Years after perform these live.

What an extraordinarily difficult, yet wonderful topic!

Inevitably there are a number of candidates from incredibly gifted guitarists, including Zappa, Clapton, Stevie Ray, Satch, Steve Howe, Hackett, Vai, Jeff Beck, Buckethead, Duane Allman, Carlos, Edie Hazel of Funkadelic (think Maggot Brain), Mark Knopfler, Ritchie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa and even Neil Young (think Southern Man), just to name a few, here's my top 5:

1. David Gilmour, Comfortably Numb
2. Jimmy Page, Stairway To Heaven
3. Jimi Hendrix, All Along The Watchtower
4. Robert Fripp, Baby's On Fire
5. Allen Collins, Free Bird

BTW, kudos to Lee for mentioning Eric Johnson. I've seen him in concert a few times and he is an absolutely gifted guitarist and Cliffs Of Dover is a fantastic song.

Thread has made me smiled (for all the right reasons).
How many have watched air guitar championships (US or World Championship)?
Provides some of the best solo guitar music, along with err interesting imagination of air guitar :)

Although this does restrict the music used and misses out on some other great stuff.
Cheers
