I suppose you could say Lance Armstrong. Seven tour victories is no mean feat. He avoided crashes, illness and just plain bad luck. The problem Lance was allowed to train solely for the Tour de France. He could race or not race any time he felt. Money , equipment or team support was never an issue.

My vote has to go to Eddie Merckx. Eddie raced to make a living, often racing twice a week. Showed up for all the one day classics. He also dominated the stage races. He was called the Cannibal because he literally destroyed the field. His wins were not so much based on tactics. He literally rode away form the field. I don't think they'll be another like him.

Without a doubt Eddy Merckx! He's still the only rider to hold the yellow jersey, polka dot jersey and points jersey in the tour de France. He also won all three tours when he was competing. Gregadd stated he raced all of the classics. The riders today just focus on the grand tours riding 14 lb carbon fibre bikes. Since we're talking bicyle racing my favourite rider of all times would be Freddy Maertens. 53 road victories in one season!

Sven Nys, The Cannibal from Baal. Still winning races at 39 in a sport, cyclocross, were youth is a big advantage.

....well it just has to be Merckx doesn't it....no one else's palmares come even close....but the thing that for me stands out is the following....

"Between 1969 and 1975 he won about 35 percent of the races he entered..."

...which if you have ever raced bikes will understand as beyond phenomenal....and this was done with Eddie having a huge target on his back as he was always the favourite ....everybody wanted that wheel ( for all the good it did them...and Eddie was a big guy so it was a big wheel...and with all due respect to Nys who is a monster, sucking wheels don't matter much in cyclo-cross... )....

Cheers

Miguel Indurain.
...the machine.

He's my favorite . I even wore a Banesto jersey long after he retired. Basicall he had no shoulders which made him a beast in the time trial. My vote as best still goes to Eddie

Eddy merckx , because he won everything , one day classics , tours , he didnt preselect a particular race to win , he wanted to win everything , thats why he was called de kannibaal flemish/dutch for the cannibal .
Although i doubt he would be able to do the same trick today with all the specialisations .
Second lance what a fighting machine winning spirit he had / has , now with lawsuits ;), before on the bike ,still a prototype of a winner for me no matter what , dont forget they were all juiced at that time
