In the latest TAS magazine there is a letter from someone who had wax cleaned from his ear resulting in ability to better hear high frequencies. $20 was his co-pay I assume. Don't recall his age but I think he was pushing 60.

Question for the medical professionals: should people have regular cleaning of their ears? I used to use Q-tips every morning to clean my ears after shower but someone told me that some amount of wax is necessary in the ear (to keep out contaminants?) so I stopped.

So what say you? Useful Tweak? Should one self-medicate with Q-tips? :D

Definitely IMO Q-tips can be the culprit to cause more harm than good. I agree that a certain amount of wax is necessary BUT the cerumen producing glands lie at the opening of the external canal. Do not insert the Q-tip any lower into the canal. I also mention cerumenolytics in passing only to condemn them. Many time if you use a preparation like this the wax softens and dissipates intio the canal where it might cover the tympanic membrane thus reducing hearing cconsiderably in that ear.
