Dean Potter on the Eiger

Here's Dean Potter, master Yosemite climber, on a combination free solo (no ropes) and base jump from the infamous Eiger North Wall:

Sorry, a couple of the video links didn't get in the first time. I've included the rest of the series.

Love the comment: but it gets boring when you jump too far out from the mountain.

They get so close to the rock faces that I bet some people kill themselves indeed!

So, not only they lose their skis, but some lose their lives too!

Oh well, that's what 'living on the edge' and taking risks is all about right?

I think the helmets are pretty funny. Like if you get too close and dash yourself against the side of the mountain at 100 mph in a nylon suit, the helmet is going to help. :)

At those speeds, the helmet is merely a psychological reassurance. It might prevent bugs, etc. from bruising your face/head, but that's about it.

They also offer some (real) protection in the event of an iffy landing, like losing their footing just after touching down.

Helmets may also prevent hair loss caused by terminal velocity ;)

I bet that man will be able to fly on his own eventually, without any engine or propeller, or any other type of mechanical device...

Just adaptable wings. And no parachute! ...iFly. :)
