Dealing with counterfeiters is a major concern for most high end luxury goods makers including watch makers.

Here is what can happen to a counterfeiter and his watches:

***7,000 fake Rolex watches are steamrolled in Philly

(AP) – Apr 27, 2010

PHILADELPHIA — A steamroller has crushed about 7,000 fake Rolex watches in Philadelphia under the orders of federal authorities seeking to deter would-be counterfeiters. Customs officials staged the destruction Monday to highlight law enforcement's role in protecting intellectual property rights. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say the watches were seized from Binh Cam Tran, who pleaded guilty last year to charges including trafficking in counterfeit goods.

Tran is serving six years in federal prison. He has been ordered to pay more than $2.2 million to the Rolex Co. Authorities say Tran fabricated hundreds of thousands of fake Rolex watches in his home near Philadelphia. Officials seized about 24,000 counterfeit watches and enough parts to create 1 million more.

Interesting. Do you think that most of the target customers would know that these watches are "replicas"?

Maybe because they spelled Rolex Rollex? :)

BTW one has to even be careful when buying used watches that the movement is genuine.

Lots of folks getting duped on ebay. I know a japanese fellow who found out he'd been duped when he developed a rash after our round of golf. I felt bad for him but just couldn't resist laughing 'til I wept. He'd been boasting about what a great deal he'd made. The irony was just too much for me to take on with a straight face.

Replicas are sophisticating as time goes, there are even original outside boxes with replicated motors as a way to get additional profit from non-working wrist watches. Everytime that I am offered a used watch I have it inspected by my trusty watchman/jeweler -he has a collection of stories around fake units.
