John McGlinn spent a lot of time researching the history of Broadway musicals. He made a number of recordings in which the songs are done in the original style.

Here are some recommendations:

For a start, look for "Kiri Sings Gershwin" on EMI. This is a collection of songs by Gershwin sung by opera singer Kiri Te Kanawa rather than a Broadway musical album. The recording is somewhat shrill (EMI pops rather than classical) but Kiri has the voice for these songs and McGlinn got her to sing with authentic style.

The McGlinn Showboat is wonderful. "Can't help loving Dat man" is my favorite in this show but it's all done very well.

The McGlinn "Kiss me Kate" is even better than the Alfred Drake / Patricia Morison verson. "Too darned hot" is very wicked.

"Annie get your gun" is first rate.

McGlinn's "Anything goes" and the Lincoln Center Theater Cast "Anything Goes" are both very good.
