Late introduction

Dear What's Best,

I joined two months ago; I have already posted 28 messages, but it's never too late to introduce myself.

I am in my late forties. I always lived in Montréal, a very musical city. My native language is French, so my English skills are limited. I have studied electrical engineering, music and sound recording, but I'm not a professional audio specialist; I chose to be a software developper, and I worked on a few interactive music, video and web projects. I am a strong supporter of FOSS (free and open source software) for audio and video.

I'm looking for useful information and advices to upgrade my humble hi-fi system that I bought 28 years ago. I first need to fix my very small listening room and get better speakers. I want to understand as much as I can before investing in any piece of equipment, including for DIY projects.

I hope to contribute to this forum by asking meaningful questions and reporting about my experiences.

I'm interested by "3D" audio, starting with stereo; now I'm hooked on ambiophonics, and I plan to experiment with ambisonics (including 5.1).

I am absolutely not interested by esoteric "high-end" gear, ultra-resolution, low distortion, vinyl discs, turntables, big speakers, giant subwoofers, ultra-super-tweeters, tubes, etc... To me, simplicity and common sense are beautiful.

Thanks!

There is a great line in my favorite cooking show, the Japanese Iron Chef: "Tell me what you eat, and I tell you who you are!"

In the same manner, introductions like yours are very useful to set context and bring better understanding of people who socialize our forum. So thanks for writing it.

Amir,
Thanks for your warm welcoming reply!

I just checked the "Madrona Digital" web site. It is a distributor of the Lexicon products; the logo reminded me that I programmed a (never released) Macintosh MIDI control software for the Lexicon LXP2 digital reverb, back in 1987... :)
