Hey gents - I will be spending two weeks in Japan soon. Obviously I will stroll through Akihabara in Tokyo, but are there any recommended hifi adventures I should pursue?

I wouldn't bother with audio stores. When I visited, a friend told me most of the serious stores are by appointment only, at least for the big stuff. I've been to one or two stores, but they were of the "shelves full of stuff" variety. Lots of Accuphase, Tannoy... Perhaps a visit to one of those exotic horn systems would be more interesting too...

Time would be much better spent at the record stores, such as the numerous Disk Union locations.

One tip: make sure you have Internet or at the least a GPS. You'll need it. I believe they don't use GSM there, so our phones won't work for data.
I've rented a 3G hotspot for my trip, so both my wife and I could have Internet access. It was reasonably priced, and worked everywhere, even in the subway.

cheers,
Alex

Thanks! I had heard the exact same thing. Rented a pocket WiFi this morning for $5/day :)
