I guess you’re just insensitive to what the woman had to endure for the past 10 years as she got locked out. To each our own Kal.

Steve, I know nothing about that, can you provide a link please
We cannot expect others to have the knowledge of her past life's experience.
This is the first time ever in my life that I've heard of her.

To be totally honest I can relate to Kal's comment because I too I'm in the blind and it's not the music style delivery that gets my mojo moving. I understand what you're saying though, but personally I know nothing of her past and I take her as she comes with that restricted knowledge.
* And Classical listening music lovers are sensitive people, very.

What happened to her, why was she kept in a dark closed corridor, and for that long? Was it abuse, hatred, jealousy, ...?

I've stopped watching them as well. Even though I'm in the Industry, the Grammys especially, are just a popularity contest. Before the Grammy noms come out in October, Industry folk are flooding my email and voicemail with "pick me, pick me" messages. It's like the robo calls you get before the elections....

"Popularity contest" ... that was exactly what I thought. I've only read briefly some lines here and there from the internet and it was just enough for me to stay out of the illusionary world we live in.

I don't mean to object, or deduct, or disqualify, or reduce, or disagree, or ...
...Respectful honest opinion.

Not at all. I understand the message and her passionate commitment to it. It is her mode of communicating it that I do not appreciate. I just found it bad music. (I will omit all the reasons for that.)

Man....the music industry completely blows!!!! What a dumb show the grammy’s have become.

Another box ticked on why I do not watch, they have lost control of themselves.
Its to the point now that they are so exposed in their greed and other misbehavior that people have figured out how to do it on their own, create their own label up front and get some smaller company to produce the volume.

Hollywood and the music industry have a major overhaul starting/coming.

I have to stop here.

I am outraged that clearly superior women artists came away empty handed....

I turned it off, went to my room, and listened to all four sides of Hope by Hugh Masekela in his memory. A wonderful elixir to that mess.

I never watch awards shows!

They are too slow moving, I'm not interested in seeing the performances during the show, most of the music up for and getting awards is crap and I can wait until the list is published on the internet after the show is over--or the next day if I remember to look.

It appears my patience has paid off. Steve posted a complete list that took a minute to read instead of hours to watch. Thank you!

Totally agree Kal. I hate rap. What caught my attention was the way she was introduced followed by the stark white clothes of her and her entire backup including Cindy Lauper.

I started this saying I hate rap and TBH I was doing something else at the time. It was only when I heard the lyrics and the passion with which all of them sang caused me to ask my daughter “what did we just hear”

My daughter gave me a capsule commentary of the significance of that song. I found the rest in 2 mouse clicks in line

So Bob with all of the kinks you provide in every post and in every thread I suggest you can find the answer easily to your question

Rap is something I get no pleasure from hearing. Last night was very different. For me at least

I totally agree except that there were no basketball games on and my wife and daughter wanted to watch. You know how that goes

BTW they did pay tribute briefly to Hugh Masakela

Not an option in our home! My wife loves Rap/Hip Hop and Country.
So over the decades i have cherry picked a few I actually enjoy, but I dont own any. What ever i can find on you tube is fine. BUT, its all about the BASS!

It is not a matter of liking/disliking Rap for me. It is just that her earnest righteousness was a statement but it didn't result in good music, imho.

I didn't want to share all the negative reviews...just too messy and painful.
They are all pretty much on that same line of thought ...

Steve, it's all fine; we are all family.

I watched this last night:

Different, very.
___

EDIT: I briefly perused into her wiki entry to learn some:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kesha

And I checked this article even more briefly because it's a world that I don't understand to its full value:
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/...-need-to-know-to-understand-the-case-20160222

It must feel real lonely to be a pop star, an Instagram star, a porn star, a rapper, /// I don't know, I've never been there, it's only a perception of an illusive world...

IMO, there are a number of RAP singers and groups who are in the business simply to make the big bucks...they have no talent and little to no understanding of musicianship. Having said that, I also know that there are some very talented musicians who use the medium to try and expose their message. Sometimes(many times) that message is one of rebellion or the feeling of injustice.
The meaning of music then becomes an interesting question...as a musician are we tasked with just trying to enrapture an audience with sound that makes them want to listen more and to have a visceral reaction, ( hopefully a positive reaction)— AND/OR are we also in a position wherein we can make a social statement about the mores and injustices that we all see around us??

Kesha was trying to make a social statement...which I believe she carried off well...Kendrick Lamar...a different statement, and one that I am not so sure I agree with. Is this music? In my opinion it is, however, whether this is the type of music we like or we dislike is certainly up for question. One thing I think we have to be very careful of...should we lump all of the genre into one bag and say...I don’t like RAP or Classical or?… I think not, but again that’s just.....

IMHO:D

One person's passion and earnestness is another person's over-emoting and pitchiness.

One person's derivative and underwhelming is another person's Eric Clapton.

C'est la vie.

There are many things about the Grammy's I found confounding. Who does the voting? Who determines the details of the show? Is it an executive committee like the Oscars and if so, why is rap and hip hop emphasized at the expense of rock? Or is rock too white to be politically correct for the producers? Apparently so. Get this-

The most disgusting review of the show was the lead article in USA today the morning after, where the reviewer was angry the lead awards did not go to people of color. He found this particularly disappointing since he was elated the nominations had so many. I couldn't believe this flagrant racist remark, and moreover, that USA today would actually print it. Can you imagine that? This guy basically said that Bruno Mars is too white to win Album of the Year. Can you imagine what they would do to a white reviewer if it was the other way around?

Could the focus on rap and hip hop be the cause of the 20% decline in viewership this year?

I can't say I'm a huge fan of rap or hip hop but I do appreciate the artistry, especially the choreography. For me, rap isn't music, it's theater. I try and understand it but who can understand it if you can't make out the words? Am I supposed to tape it and play it back at half-speed? And while I appreciate that some used the show as a political bully pulpit, I thought this was supposed to be an award show for music? I really had to bite my tongue for many of the political sentiments, but that's not the point. I just didn't think that was the forum for politics as opposed to celebrating the best of the year's best music, which they didn't do very well. Or rather, they pandered to a select audience, and it sure wasn't me.

The best comment of the night on the show was when James Corden introduced his parents and noticed they had a Hamilton Playbill on their lap. When he asked them incredulously if they saw Hamilton, his dad replied, "well, you know this show is so long we thought we would duck out and see Hamilton and then come back and no one would know". Obviously a staged routine, but funny. And true.
