TV RCA Jacks to Stereo Headphones: Will This Method Work?

My wife and I like to use headphones when watching TV. When we travel, the TV sets we have access to sometimes do not have a stereo-jack output. And for most (or all?) TVs, the RCA outputs cannot be attached directly to headphones. They must be attached to an amplifier.

So, I’ve been looking for an inexpensive, compact amplifier to do the job. The problem is that the ones I’ve looked at do not have a stereo- headephone output. Instead, they have a place to connect R+, R-, L+, L- speaker wires.

My solution is to buy the following Amazon components and cobble them together (includes links):

Listed in sequence.

RCA Male-to-Male Cables

Compact Amplifier

Speaker Wires to 3.5mm Headphone Plug

3.5mm Stereo Jack to 3.5mm Stereo Jack

3.5mm Stereo Male to 3.5 mm 2 Females Splitter

So, my question is (you guessed it), will this work? Is there a better way to do it?

Thanks,
Bill

From one Bill to another... Something like this headphone amplifier would be a simpler solution. It has RCA inputs and four separate headphone outputs with individual volume controls. There are many similar devices available at a wide range of prices, but this one seemed reasonably priced and appears to suit your stated needs. Hope this helps!

We Bills do have to stick together, right?

Thank you so much. The reviews look great, and compared with buying several components, the price is certainly within my budget.

Thanks again,
Bill

One quick question. I think I know the answer. Can I assume power comes from 120 AC, not DC?

Yes, it includes an external power supply (also called a wall wart) which plugs into your AC and provides the required DC voltage to the unit. Glad I was able to help and welcome to WBF!

Follow up: I received the Polsen HPA-4X2 4-Channel Stereo Headphone Amplifier. It works great, so that RCA cables from a TV's audio output (stereo headphone output not available) can be used with headphones. Simple as pie. Thanks, Bill.

Glad that it worked out so well for you, and B&H Photo is an honest and reliable seller. Yours wasn't exactly a typical issue here on WBF but members are generally happy to help each other. All the best!
