Way too much good music this year! Couldn't possibly narrow it down to a top ten or even a baker's dozen. So I cheated. It struck me that many of these albums seemed to work well as pairs. So here goes...all available on glorious vinyl

Real Estate"Somersault" /Beach Fossils "In Mind"

Dreamy pop from bands hailing from NY/Jersey. Both LPs have very good to excellent sonics.

Dan Auerbach "Waiting on A Song"/Delicate Steve "This Is Steve"

The Black Key's guitarist steps out for a surprisingly well crafted pop LP instead of typical Black Keys' oeuvre. Delicate Steve really shreds on this relatively short LP with fine sound quality.

Childhood "Universal High"/Sharon Jones "Soul of a Woman"

Second time out for Childhoods' dreamy soul and the final LP from soul dynamo, cut as she was dying from pancreatic cancer.

Eilen Jewell "Down Hearted Blues" /Valerie June "Order of Time"

Two great releases by country/blues/bluegrass fusion artists. Both are great live performers.

Bootsy Collins "World Wide Funk"/Trombone Shorty "Parking Lot Symphony"

It's Bootsy baby! Great funk LPs from a grizzled veteran and the rising newcomer. Best Bootsy track is the homage to his late collaborator Bernie Worrell.

Steve Winwood "Greatest Hits Live"/Roadcase Royale "First Things First"

Yes, Winwood's album is too long, but it's well recorded and a great document of his current stage show. Roadcase Royale is a Nancy Wilson (Heart) side project. Nothing earth shattering, just a solid (and well recorded) R&B album with a couple of cooking Heart covers.

Spoon "Hot Thoughts"/Marcy Playground (RSD Reissue)

Both bands know how to craft and perform a great pop song. Both LPs feature excellent sonics; the RSD reissue of Marcy Playground is demo quality. I smell Sex and Candy!

Sallie Ford "Get Out"/Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile "Lotta Sea Lice"

My favorite two albums of the year. Great song writing and guitar riffs. Is the best single "Get Out" or is it "Failure" from Sallie? Or is it "Over Everything" by CB&KV?
