point taken.

but to say there is a renaissance of horns belies Audiogon sales or dealer sponsorship. There is 1 dealer for AG, Cessaro, Horning etc. in the US. Most of the JBLs (made in our backyard no less!) have been sold to Japan for years - nothing new. Most of the other horns are bespoke, direct vendors (Volti, Spatial, etc.)

that said, I can't wait to hear your incoming JBL-like PBNs! I'm a horn fan - but my girlfriend says AGs are ugly :(

Good points. I would also add that both the major audio magazines in the USA have an open distaste for horn speakers. This has hurt their representation in the USA.

As far as horn's un-popularity, newly-reviewed brands aren't the whole picture. 3 more supports for the horn:

-DIY -of retro-brands or new construction
-Not reviewed -like GedLee & Klipsch Heritage
-Defunct brands still used -Edgar & Sunny. In 2008, 3 reviewers for the Stereotimes bought Sunny horns.

Emerald Physics seem to have many owners, Avantguarde resides in several reviewer's systems and is always selling on Audiogon.

If we count waveguides (no long-throat), then ATC & Devore O-series resides in quite a few reviewer's systems.

I'm having speakers built that are based around the compression driver and horn from the M2 speaker. Should be delivered mid December and pics will follow.

I've had my 5 Avantgarde horn system for close to 15 years (and the were all bought used). 2 Duos and 3 Solos. I started looking for speakers which could be driven by a low powered SET. Larry

Hello jeffrey

Is it the passive version with dual 2235's? Was very surprised that JBL Pro made the waveguides available. I have been sitting on a driver set for about 2 years now with the same idea. One of these days!

Yes but they will be a little different than the speakers on his site. They will be MTM and have the classic PBN trapezoid shape. They'll look similar to the pic posted below.

I love the DIY speakers you've made, I wish I was that talented!

Here are some of PBN’s current speakers utilizing the JBL drivers. They are very, very good. MSRP at 30 K , and a bargain, especially considering what passes for high end today in some of the over inflated speaker pricing that seems to have no end in sight .

Why not get the 4367?

That M2 WG is designed to be used with a dsp system where the 4367 is not.

Yes the M2 was designed around DSP, however PBN spent many, many months fine tuning a passive crossover that is very successful, so DSP isn’t needed. The 4367 utilizes just one 15 , where as the PBN 2.5 utilizes 2 15’s per side. It just moves substantially more air than a 4367.
Cheers....

Hello Dave

The system may be DSP but the M2 waveguide is very good and works very well with a passive crossover. Here is a raw measurement of a 476Mg on the M2 and a Leap crossover solution based on Greg Timbers "Key Filter" design. With this compression driver all you need is a series filter and HF bypass and a single parallel notch filter to do the compensation to flatten the response on the waveguide. This waveguide is actually very similar to the 2344 and PTH1010

a photo and spl response

Well, as I stated earlier, it takes a lot of time tuning your speakers and your room. Horns, although have great directivity and this is an advantage, whatever you do, you will still be listening to your room. I am redoing my room as of now and will have better response with less dips and boosts and more even and controlled decay in bass and better imaging as opposing walls be symmetrically on both of my speakers. Still, my current response is within the +-5db range from 18hz to 20khz which is quite good and will be +-3b with the current changes I am doing to my room. Any room response within in a 10db window is good and in between 15db is still acceptable. Less than 10db difference and evenly controlled decay means a reference response to me. My 220hz boost will be solved as well as the one in 65hz (that boost will go down to 58hz in the new room dimensions but will be absorbed) and I will be close to my idea of a reference room. This is also not a completely dedicated room, as it is the main room of our house. I did have a room like that when I had my music studio but thats another story. My other half loves music and appreciates my hobby especially after me building my own speaker system, now she likes me spending tuning and upgrading the sound, even likes me measuring it trying to set up all kind of contrapments I come up with :) Not to stray too far... Modern understanding and application of horns can be very good and will have a signature dynamic but not the fatiguing sound they were remembered for. Being a non-fatiguing system is one of the most I hear from other listeners who come to my space to listen.

Nice. The best horns I have heard are all custom made.
