Glad you enjoyed the read, Peter and Ack, thanks.

If you get those horns for demo into your room, I'm expecting an invitation. That would be quite a fascinating listen, though not an impromptu A/B/X test this time.
Hardly possible that A/B/X indeed, LOL.

Thanks, Amir, it was indeed the P21 amp and not the P20, given the single power supply. My mistake.

Only the digital. The turntable just sat there idly while I was there...it looked nice though...

Yes, I now consider those horn speakers a potential competition to my next dream speakers, which would be the flagship Reference 3A monitors, the Reflector. Yet these should have an even weightier and faster sound than my current ones, acording to designer Tash Goka whom I spoke with at the show, so that would drive them closer to the horn speakers. Greg Roberts of Volti told me that I could get a demo pair of the horn speakers for home audition, I'd just have to pay shipping, which is an attractive offer to consider.

The top Volti model, the Vittora, that Bonzo mentions might be the ideal, because it also has a bass horn rather than a conventional dynamic woofer, which should make for an even more integrated sound. Alas I consider them out of my price range, but even at $ 25K they might be a bargain when it comes to performance, extrapolating from what I heard with the Volti Audio Rival speakers.

By the way, when it comes to timbral resolution I assume that the top BorderPatrol amps are not limiting. I now experience even with my own amps, which 'only' use the BorderPatrol MB power supplies, timbral resolution that is quite spectacular (solo violin, massed orchestral violins, among others). Given that

    a) tube circuitries are comparatively simple,
    b) the external BorderPatrol power supplies dramatically lower the noise floor (as also heard in my system), which is crucial to timbral resolution and spatial information, and
    c) the massive top level EXS power supplies should lower the noise floor even more,

I assume that the top BorderPatrol model(s) more than likely can easily compete with the best amps when it comes to resolution -- provided that source, cables and speakers do their job as well. The final proof will be in the listening of course, but for the time being I think this is a reasonable assumption.
I personally prefer horn bass over convetional box bass. In my system it gets down to 40hz ok but not a lot deeper, so for some music I augment with a Mirage dipolar servo sub, which is sealed and very fast so it integrates pretty good with the horns for the bottom octave or so.

As to the BP amps, were they SET or PP? I know BP makes both kinds of amps. You should try SET on your speakers...I thought SET worked brilliantly with my Ref 3as.

The BP amp was push-pull. I have heard an excellent, very impressive SET amp (Tron) on Bastanis open-baffle speakers at a friend's house recently, but in general I am a push-pull guy, so the BP amp at the show was my cup of tea. I don't experience any of the sonic drawbacks that you describe from push-pull, therefore I am not eager to try an SET amp in my own system at this point. As I described my experience at the show, the tone of the push-pull BP amp through the Volti speakers was excellent and the sound had a lot of physical, visceral punch.

    Don't like Bastanis at all
Audition recordings: Zero Distortion Link; Reference Components: Zero Distortion Link; Own: Lampi GG One-day-to-get: Apogee Scintilla, or a horn (with Tenor 75 OTL ), Preamp to be fit in to suit the gain and drive the power amp. Analog: TBD

You must have heard them under suboptimal conditions. The Bastanis Mandala speakers in that system sound spectacular.

In any case, you definitely should try to hear the big Volti speakers as you had planned to.
