I just tried mucking around again today and my spectral analysis function has a limit of 65,536 bins. The fact that the spectral graphs do not equal what happens on the dB meter when I actually play back the segment concerned is quite annoying for me personally, though luckily I have never used spectral analysis for any purpose that requires it to be the case. But I used your formula and unsurprisingly it does work :)

For achieving maximal resolution used FFT window is very important.

For spectrum analyzis tool recommended -200 ... -300 dB lower border for opening all adwantages of FFT 2^16.

It need for analyzis of 32/64-bit float point formats.
