Amazon Studios backed this one and its going to be up for all the major categories at the awards - and well deserved. The story follows a minimum wage handyman who loses his brother to a heart condition and who must then cope with his teenage nephew.
Casey Affleck is the star here and was exceptional. The New England cinematography was also a spectacle and kept the movie moving along despite the longish 2:15 runtime. This movie won't be a general population hit like Arrival, but it is very well done and definitely a critics "film." I enjoyed it quite a bit and felt it was much better than last year's runner up, the Revenant. If there was a negative, its Michelle Williams who didn't really nail her character to me as well as just that the subject material is pretty grievous. There are a few moments of humor though that add to the character development and really keep you involved.
Manchester by the Sea is a great script and should be up for best screenplay as well. Easily A category material for me, although I don't feel it will beat LaLa Land for Best Picture - despite probably being the better movie. Recommended.
