This is a WBF Library thread for best papers in design and understanding of various of methods for amplifying sound.
I will keep updating this first page with your suggestions.
Class D:
Introduction to Class-D amplifiers with a simply intro for other types: http://www.eetimes.com/design/audio-design/4015727/How-Class-D-audio-amplifiers-work
http://www.aes-media.org/740368100/tutorials/124_M4_Putzeys/
Somewhat technical paper by Crown on "Class I" which is an enhancement of Class D design, which increases the switching frequency (good thing). This is also the foundation of amplification in Mark Levinson 53 which takes this to an extreme by 8-way interleaving: http://www.crownaudio.com/pdf/amps/bcapaper.pdf
Brief design paper on Mark Levinson No 53 class-D amp: http://www.marklevinson.com/downloads/ML No53 Technology Background V5 04032010.pdf
Simple intro to class D amps from International Rectifier (maker of our output transistors): http://www.irf.com/technical-info/appnotes/an-1071.pdf
Power supply considerations: http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/slyt199/slyt199.pdf
Extremely well written tutorial in circuit topologies for class D. Mandatory read especially for DIY folks. The second on different ways to implement this at the end is also very worthwhile read: https://www.coldamp.com/store/media/pdf/Class_D_audio_amplifiers_White_Paper_en.pdf
A somewhat more detailed article from TI on use of class D ICs: http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/sloa031/sloa031.pdf
Not sure much is unique in this article other than the spread spectrum techniques for reducing EMI: http://www.maxim-ic.com/app-notes/index.mvp/id/3977
Another overview article: http://www.wictronic.ch/Downloads/C...plification_using_Class-D_(Output Filter).pdf
http://www.rane.com/pdf/ranenotes/Class_D_Amplifier_Technologies.pdf
Avoiding power supply pumping: http://www.eetindia.co.in/STATIC/PDF/200907/EEIOL_2009JUL27_POW_TA_01.pdf?SOURCES=DOWNLOAD
Long, somewhat biased toward their own products, and lacking detail set of slides on class d with some good insight: http://www.hypex.nl/docs/papers/AES124BP.pdf
Tube Amps:
This is really a review of Lamm amplifiers but I enjoyed reading the easy intro to transformer based tube amps: http://lammindustries.com/reviews/ML3 LL1 review TAS dec 2010.pdf
Power Supply
Power Supply is a key part of amplifier design. Here is a simple tutorial on the differences between linear and switch-mode power supplies: http://www.national.com/an/AN/AN-556.pdf
Amplifier Distortions
Great write up on various types of distortion in amplifiers: http://sound.westhost.com/amp-sound.htm
