I am not normally a big fan of watching a foreign film with English subtitles but often there come along some great films which IMO are in fact best watched this way.

This came to mind yesterday when my wife and I watched The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

I am interested what foreigns films with English subtitles (not dubbed in English) you have appreciated over the years

Probably one of my all time favorites was "The Lives Of Others" which received the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2006

Here is a trailer. If you haven't seen this one, it is an absolute must

Another of my all time favorites is Life Is Beautiful which won 3 Academy Awards in 1997 including Best Actor for Roberto Benigni

I also enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth

I also enjoyed "Das Boot" a clasic from 1981

I have many others but am anxious to see if these also occupy high spots on your foreign film lists

The Orphanage is another Spanish film with English subtitles. I believe it is another Guillermo Del Toro film (too lazy to run and check). A very good suspense/mild horror film that will send chills down the spine of parents everywhere. Good video with awesome 7.1 DTS-HD/MA. Highly recommended.

All good choices Steve!

"The Lives of Others" is one of the best movies I have seen in decades. It truly is a masterpiece. And well, what can we say about "Das Boot", maybe one of the most anticipated movies waiting for a Blu-ray release.

My Blu-ray collection isn't large by any stretch (a little under 150 titles) , but I find myself drawn more and more to "Imports". The quality of the writing, the cinematography, the so very different subject matter is so refreshing from what gets churned out of the Hollywood machine.

That was neat. At first I thought it was a documentary but it clearly is not. Well done way of making you think so....

The 400 Blows; Love this early Truffaut film about a troubled boy. Trailer....

I will second Night and Day Watch -- two really fun movies, makes full use of film medium.

My Life as a Dog; Lasse Halstrom, poignant film about the mysteries of life through as seen through the eyes of a child. Trailer....

Cinema Paradiso; A coming of age story about the relationship between a boy and his mentor as explored through the medium of cinema in post-war Italy. Trailer.....

Let the Right One In; Slightly different take on a recently familiar theme; Vampires. This is not Twilight. This is moody and contemplative and uses the genre to explore themes of aging, gender, adolescent fears, and relationships. Trailer....

Kitchen Stories; Norwegian. Hilarious story about a Swedish researcher sent by a kitchen appliance manufacturer's engineering team to study the kitchen habits of potential customers for the purpose of engineering better, more useful appliances. The Norwegian humor is deadpan and subtle, but incredibly ticklish. I love this film.

Here's a trailer....

I adopted a son from China in December so I have been watching some Chinese movies based on historical people/events. Mongol is pretty good, but Red Cliff is an incredible epic movie directed by John Woo. It is 280 minutes long (make sure you get the international version) but the movie is over before you know it. The Blu-ray has excellent video and audio quality. If you like Lawrence of Arabia or Lord of the Rings, you should like the enormous battles, beautiful landscapes, and character development that Red Cliff offers.

Mongol was excellent.

I've got the blu-ray International Red Cliff in my cue -- looking forward to it!

13 Assassins

Samurai flick that makes Kill Bill look like Dora the Explorer. I'd rate this NC-17 for violence, keep the kids out.

I refuse to watch movies with dubbed soundtracks - happily I am able to easily understand french and english, and a little italian and spanish, so it covers most of the movies I see. But I always get the version with subtitles. IMHO dubbing spoils most of the original drama of the movie.

I haven't watched a lot of Chinese films lately after Crouching Tiger and Hero, and good to know there are a couple more good ones in the modern era. Mongol seems interesting. I did watch a film about Genghis Khan in the late 70s but I'm sure Mongol will be better. And I passed on a trip to Inner Mongolia in the 80s when my dad told me our hotel looked like tents, big tents. I couldn't imagine what we were going to eat then. LOL
