This question was supposedly asked of 11-12 year olds in Singapore.

Can you find the area of the shaded parts?

I sincerely believe that only the very brightest 11-12 year olds in the USA can answer this. Are kids in other countries so far ahead of us in math and science?

WOW! I remember a test I took in the 11th grade (so I would have been about 17) that had 6 questions like this. If Singapore 11 and 12 year olds are doing this, it would explain a lot of why the US is where we are educationally.

I was top of my class in mathematics...the geometry side of equations. I would need to re-plunge like forty plus years ago to get my brain wet back again.
Lol, a boomerang.

Did you watch the entire video to see it solved?

The second method was very clever and simpler than the first, but you had to be creative.

I started to do it the way he first explained it, but after 20 minutes, I decided there were other things I had to do so I just watched his solution.

Not just that, there's also the deliberate dumbing down of education.

Singapore math rocks. My son's school uses Singapore math. You should see what they are doing in 4th grade. Amazing.

Jack, I'm happy you answered.

That's pretty impressive for 11-12 year olds to be getting that level of math education.
