FORUM, need help. Using this old pre-amplifier. Great sounding with CD of DRAGONFLY and FLAC files.
BUT whenever I play VINYL on a MM or MC cartridge, the sound dies or comes as if Mute is ON. all sorts
of sound problems.
Can you suggest how to fault trace this at component level and correct it??
Need Circuit Diagrams and perhaps the capacitors are old and finished??
Then why not with the CD and DAC files??
Perhaps its specific to the PHONO circuit??
Help!!

Given that this preamp is over thirty years old, it probably needs its dried out resistors to be replaced at the v least.

My suggestion is that you contact Roman Sokolov at Electronic Engineers, inc. Chicago, phone (773) 202-0909 or twinimage@sbcglobal.net. OAHN could get a circuit diagram from Luxman, Japan in case you don't already possess a copy.

Hope this is of help,

Philip

Although capacitors are easily replaced the usual problem with vintage preamplifiers are the electromechanical components - many times switches and commutators are worn out or oxidate and make poor contact, and are impossible to source or replace. This happens particularly with equipment that has been owned in seaside or in high pollution zones.

I have a friend with an old class A Luxman, which always gets serviced. Usually it just needs the volume pot replaced and a switch.

It can be worth the trouble, some are pretty good vintage pieces.
