Well cerwin vegas are much more efficient. I had a pair of CV speakers that were about 100dB efficient, whereas the SMGa are 86dB? Are both drivers in the magnepans actually working? Is it a full range sound when you can hear it?
I had a pair of SMGa speakers with a Classe' amp that was barely driving it, so they do need a lot of power.

100 dB - 86 dB = 14 dB. In power terms the SMGa's take 10^(14/10) = 25 times the power of the Cerwin Vega's for the same loudness. Since the Magnepans act line line sources over the lower midrange on up you effectively get a little boost, so maybe you only need about 12.5x the power, but that still means you have to crank the volume control compared to the Cerwin Vega's.
