Home theatre - need speakers to match my Denon amp.

I moved to Hong Kong, and brought my home theatre system with me. The amp is a Denon AVR X3000 surround sound amp, and I have Kef speakers for all but the two floor standing main speakers. Those were a pair of Polk Audio RT16s from my prior music system, that are probably 15+ years old. The system survived the move, except the movers destroyed the Polk Audio speakers. They were pretty well regarded when new - better than what the company now sells.

Anyway, I have to replace them; as I'm new to Hong Kong and the stores and selection are different here. I hired an a/v guy to help. He recommended that I go with a pair of "Revel F12" as the main speakers replacing the Polks, and that I should also replace the Kef center speaker with a Revel C12 to match the main speakers.

I haven't heard about the Revels, but I read online that (1) they are well regarded, but (2) have been around for 10 years. He will charge me US$1200 for the F12s and US$600 for the C12. I asked him why he recommending such dated speakers, and his reply was "still the best choice when you consider price and performance".

Advice needed: Do I go with his recommendation? Keep in mind things are probably a bit more pricey here - I'm less focused on the absolute number than having a good system. I am the definition of a novice, so would love to hear your views. I guess buying really top speakers would be a waste of money with the Denon amp?

Thanks -

Your installer is right. The Revel F series are the most underappreciated speakers there are. Anytime I would listen to them they would put a smile on my face. Their look is dated with the boxy shape but otherwise, most excellent speakers.

And no, there is no issue with driving them with the Denon AVR.

Sorry about your RT16s.

I agree with Amir; your A/V guy recommended a great substitute to your Polk speakers.
And the Denon AVR-X3000 could be upgraded as well, with one that can handle 4? speakers, and with preouts.

The Denon cannot handle 4? loads. And it cannot be used with external amps.
It would probably drive the F12, but not with full verve.

The Revel Concerta F12 dips to 2.9? @ one point, and to 4? @ couple more points. ...Below 6? @ several spots.

{Check the first measurement...for impedance.}

Thanks for the great replies all - very helpful.

Can I ask what you believe is the extent of the issue is, that is highlighted by NorthStar - i.e., the ohms issue? My old NAD amp could do 120 watts at 2 ohms, but I have moved past pure audio into surround sound as my primary usage. Thanks

"The Revel Concerta F12's voltage sensitivity was both to specification and higher than average at 90dB(B)/2.83V/m. Its impedance remained between 4 and 8 ohms over most of the audioband (fig.1), but did drop to 2.9 ohms in the low treble. This, together with the combination of 5.2 ohms and –45° electrical phase angle at 90Hz, means that a good amplifier rated at 4 ohms will be required to drive the F12 to high levels."

Ask your A/V guy what he thinks about the Denon AVR-X3000 receiver driving the Revel F12. It would work; I just don't know how impacting you like your sound. And you probably use a sub too?
