When it comes to Italian wines, is it Piedmont vs any other place?

I've had some incredible Barolo's and have been a fan of Italian wines for decades... So what's the best Italian wine region? Why are Piedmont wines so good?

I'm also a big fan of old school 100% Sangiovese that can still be found in wines made by some traditional Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti producers.

There is also Aglianico, which is fabulous, Sagrantino, and Piedirosso.

Lots of other wines besides Barolo.

There are some 500 varieties of grapes grown in Italy for their wines.
