I have the RAALs, scanspeak in the VR5. Heard the RAALS in the Alta Audios.

Have you sat down in your listening room and spent hours upon hours comparing the D3004/6640-00's to the RAAL 140-10D's? Helps when the amps are connected direct to the tweeters using SOTA DSP based Xover's as it takes all of the variables of the passive components out of the picture for the evaluation.

Crazy dispersion patterns on the RAALs??

they are fine in real world listening situations. But domes have better vertical off axis dispersion. So if you do your critical listening standing up on the couch, this may be an issue.

What about the AMT tweeters?

They have similar vertical dispersion to ribbons. This is actually a good thing in real world listening conditions because it also limits ceiling and floor reflections. The main guys I hear complain about this are dealers who have people come into showrooms listening standing up above tweeter axis.

Mike you cannot be serious, why would anyone judge a speaker standing in the listening room. Maybe a true omnidirectional speaker like the MBL would sound decent standing. Just crazy.

Well it is a valid issue in dealer showrooms. lots of times people come in groups to audition speakers. Sometimes only 1 or 2 actually sit in the listening chair, while others are standing off to the side. I have seen it many times. When walking around listening that way, it can be easy to give an subjective first impression that the speaker with better vertical off axis dispersion is superior. Same reason they have all the TV's set to make the colors pop in the showroom at Best buy. But they offer an in home optimization service for the buyers when they get it home.
