One other option is to use a stack of Mytek DACs with their clocks linked.

Yes that's right. But more costly, and not as good as the Exa or HAPI. Besides he doesn't want the Sabre chip, so I guess the project is off if he wants 8 channels, and quad DSD unless he custom builds.

edorr does this with three PS Audio dacs

Only problem he doesn't have clock sync. Maybe okay for home theatre, but not an active speaker.

I am in the same boat, I would like to do a 5.1 setup with two ways and a sub for Multichannel music and a theater as well. So 11 Channels of crossover and DSP. I would need to have enough analog inputs to route an A/V processor to handle the theater portion of Dolby/DTS master codecs and such. I also prefer to future proof a bit and have additional channels available.

Any one have any experience with one of the Orion 32(no DSD though) units?

Not me. You could also put 2- 8 channel DAC boards in the Merging Hapi and get 16 channels with DSD 256 capability, as well as Ravenna network connectivity!

You should look at Datasat, Trinnov, or illusonic. There is also something called the Mensa processor in EU. An auro 3D is a great option for MCH classical, at cheaper prices you can try the marantz or Pioneer processors that come with Atmos, and some probably with Auro
