I hold Gustavo Dudamel in high regard, and Rattle is still young (60). I certainly see new talent wrt conductors. Not sure who's equally good at compositions, though...

I watched Dudamel do Mahler 5 and the Big B's 5th. I think he was loud but not as good as what I heard later (and before). On youtube I like his Mahler 1 but not Mahler 2. I also saw Rattle do Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and then Mahler 2. By far the best was Bernard Haitink on Mahler 1 and Bruck 7 and B's 9th. Unfortunately he is also 86.

Rattle is going to be the local conductor of the LSO here from 2017 so I will get to see him much more. I will be watching him next Wednesday, and later in summer (on Bruck 8).

Oramo was absolutely brilliant with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on Mahler 3. I am going to check him out more. Going to one show on the 15th.

I haven ever been a huge fan of Boulez the conductor, or the composer. Giving us the first commercial recording of Mahler's Das Klagende Lied, though, that is what I will remember him for.

I'm a fan of his Bartok and Stravinsky in particular. Rhythmic incisiveness is correct. However, his DG recordings often sounded a touch forward and bright. For those looking to try, Rite of Spring on DG (although many would argue his earlier was more emotional and better), and Bartok's Mandarin CD and Wooden Prince CD, both on DG.

All the DG recordings seem to be re-issued at bargain pricing.

Although his record company did not give him great sound I always loved and still love his Debussy and Ravel recordings. Very transparant interpretations which provide great insight in the gorgeous music of these great composers.

Boulez interpretation of Stravinsky's Petruska with the New York Philarmonic had a strong influence in my musical and audio evolution at the early 80's. The search of great dynamics, rhythm and proper detail and decays to follow Boulez great rendering of all the orchestral tableaux, mixing love, joy, jalousie and anger still goes on.

One of his most well know pieces is Marteau sans Maitre, but Anthémes I and Anthémes II become some of my favorite contemporary pieces.
