How are people forgetting about Mahler greatest Symphony, ;) Das Lied von der Erde? My favorite is still Klemperer conducting the New Philharmonia, with Fritz Wunderlich and Christa Ludwig.

They are playing this in October, planning to go, but not at Barbican/LSO so my expectations aren't much.

Marty, thanks for that. Will get that Mahler 2 LP. I already have the Fischer CD. In terms of musical performance, I like Bernstein best on Mahler 2, especially his NY Philharmonic and Vienna, but prefer Fischer for audiophile demos. The Claudio Abbado Blu rays on MCH have very high quality and are fun to watch while listening. That is missing from Tony Duggan's list

I might get that Mahler 3 as well, as I especially love the whoe first movement there, it keeps teasing, and then when it takes off it is just glorious.

A great Mahler 5 is the Barbirolli - EMI ASD-2528-9 or SLS785. Also includes a fine Ruckert Lieder with Janet Baker. Many people got their introduction to Mahler through the Sym5's haunting Adagietto, the main theme of Visconti's film 'Death in Venice'.

There are two Mahler symphonies available on 15ips 2track tape. Horch House has Mahler Sym1 by Otto Suitner with the Dresden Staatskapelle from Eterna, and Yarlung/Sonorus has just released their Mahler 5 with Gerard Schwarz conducting the Coburn Symphony. I just play the latter a couple of nights ago - spectacular sonics and fine playing by this young orchestra.

Well, it's official. Mahler heard you and is turning over in his grave now asking "what the hell is an audiophile?"
