I became interested by Hi-Fi when I was around 15 years old.I bought different gears .But the revelation came the first time I listened to planar speakers .It was around 1980 at a Hi-Fi show in Paris, sound lab renaissance
I have never heard such a sound and was amazed but I was beginning to work and have no money at that time.
A few years later, Absolute Sound, the English high end Hi-Fi distributor made a demo in Paris of the "Apogee" with all the big krell amps, goldmund table...I was (and others people too) stunned ,it was an other world, no comparisons with all the other systems.
After I have listened to Magnepan, but never got hooked , I began to listen to more affordable apogee.
At that time the main problem with magnepan was to get them work in a small room (the 3.), it was easier for the apogee, I listened the two and with the apogee one can listen not too far, the magnepan asked for a more important distance to get a good stereo image.
In 1990 I found a demo pair of calliper signature in a shop, I had the money ready for a second hand classe DR9 and it was the beginning of a love relation with this company product.
Since that I have kept the calliper and ameliorated all the equipment and today am totally satisfied .
During some time I didn't change any component with the mortgage to pay for the house.
Around 2011 the finance get better so I began to change a few component.
I have never have a linn but trust Ivor when he said "garbage in garbage out" so I have begin with the turntable ,a heavily tweaked lenco, mounted on a PTP4, and then fixed on a plinth of 130 lb in massive aluminium professionally made, two platters..., an origin live conqueror mkII arm with zyx airy 3 cartridge.( it takes the place of a pink pt too).I use a hiraga II pre pre battery powered too.
Then a pre-amplifier doge 8 that has been tweaked on his phono section by a specialist in France. I bought it after reading the comments by Arthur Salvatore on his blog. Before that I have read his lenco L75 review.
Then I have found a second classe audio DR9 and used them mono now and the difference is quite important, the apogee works far better bi amped but I shall have no room to install 4 DR9 and they are difficult to find second hand.
My primary source of music is vinyl, I listen classical music, and mainly voices, opera, choral music...
My compact disc player is a mc cormack signature, a model which was a reference in the past but which suffice me for the moment.
I then added a purifier for the power supply,a great add.
Cables are from siltech, but as I need 15 feet between pre and amp I choose cheap mogami and with XLR the result is quite superb.
I regularly go to opera, and attend regularly concert by professional musician in a XVII century chapel and my main goal is to listen to music at home with the impression I am at opera so it's the natural aspect of the sound that count the most ( so vinyl and planar speakers are mandatory )
Here are some pictures of the turntable

Thanks a lot for your great forum and interesting threads.

Welcome to WBF, gilles13. Nice pictures of the turntable. I share the philosophy that the source is of primary importance. My upgrade path will also involve a better DAC (I don't have vinyl), while my amps and speakers are here to stay for another good while, extending the 24 years they have been in service already (albeit with modifications, especially on the amp side).

Welcome to WBF Giles. It was great to find you have an Hiraga pre-pre - I also built one long ago. Finding the specially selected Toshiba transistors was not easy at that time!
I was a frequent reader of L'Audiophile.

13 est le département des bouches du rhone. J'habite entre les bouches du rhone et le var (autre département ) au bord de la mer méditerranée.

There was two models Hiraga and Hiraga II, the first was mainly for the denon dl 103 , the II was for different high end cartridges. On mine there is 700 000 µF on each channel , but on some models one can find more than 3 F.
There is about 500 euros of components ,and one sympathetic and skilled audiophile "Hollow " built it for me with a professional look.
The sound is impressive, Jean Hiraga is a great guy.

Hi Gilles, welcome, my first wife was french, therefore I mostly only comprehend the curse words.

I miss good ole Arthur, really enjoyed our talks when he was in town, before he decided to head permanently south. Nice to read that some still covet the DR9, indeed hard to find on the used market, I loved that amp.

I was avidly reading l'audiophile in the 80, I began to work, full of dreams but no money so diy. I build "le système neveu" but could not build bigger speaker because I knew I shall have to move for my job in very small flat numerous time.
I followed the panels way but I remember listening their big Onken system, fantastic sound .
J Hiraga follows the same way, as seen on the report from the European triode festival.
