Anyone heard about this Swiss mediaserver : the Orpheus Absolute Mediaserver (Audio + Video)

It can play CD/DVD/Blueray and also RIP CD/DVD.
The latest version include 2 headphone out : SE jack 6,5mm + Balanced 4 pins XLR !

Personally, I would go with a separate server and DAC. Servers get obsolate very quickly and hi-end companies do not offer to many upgrades (if any).

Odd ad copy at the end of that link. I tells me about the optical disc's capabilities, the SSHD, the outputs, etc. But there is no mention of the DAC, the thing in there with the greatest potential impact on sound.

You are right. After some digging on their own web site it says:

"Internal upsampling based on ESS 9018 DAC used in mono mode (8/channel)"

That's a good chip, as far as I know. The other odd thing is they don't talk about the software, the user interface, at all. Seems like those two things - the user interface and the analog output, are the most important thing a server does.

Chip used says very little about the DAC performance. There are both crappy and good ESS based designs.

A lot of good things have certainly been written about Orpheus Labs and their digital...weren't the founders here also from Goldmund and Anagram Technologies another Swiss digital audio company?

Anagram used to own Orpheus Labs. One of the two founders worked for Goldmund.
