One of our long-standing members over at blu-ray.com has just been diagnosed with this condition after the discovery of a tumor on the left side of his brain. Luckily and thankfully it is benign. He's pretty scared and posted this as he'd like to get more information. He's meeting with his surgeon on Wednesday.

Is there anyone here who can shed some light on this for him. I'd like to pass it on.

Thanks in advance for looking and helping a fellow member out.

He doesn't say, but I've just asked him.

Where is he based? Presume he is speaking with a good ENT surgeon (Ear, Nose & Throat)?

well the two that you mention are benign although surgery for an acoustic neuroma sometimes leads to hearing issues post op depending on the involvement of the auditory nerve

Yes, I have heard that as well.

Here is what he said:

I've been diagnosed with AN, entire left side of my face is numb, ringing on my left ear, my worst fear is not even the surgery it self but losing hearing on one side

Is this a case of what we liberally call 8th cranial nerve damage?

Very liberally but more likely an acoustic schwannoma that is more likely to arise from the vestibular division of the 8th nerve, The facial numbness suggests trigeminal involvement.

I'm sad to report that after an apparent successful operation he passed away a few days later from complications. He was in his mid-thirties and leaves behind a wife and two children.

Thank you very much! Our busy lives sometimes make us forget about the things that are truly important, and I've been guilty of that in the past. Fortunately I've seen the light and make sure that my family comes first...I've never been happier!
