I think this is definitely going to interest those with LP setup, or fascinated with the comparison between direct cut albums (recording studio straight to the Master lacquer disc) and those that are more traditional/common involving Master tape first that is then transferred to the Master LP.
The double album is a big band production; Syd Lawrence Orchestra and produced for Chasing the Dragon at Air Studios.
Much more detail can be found on these links, strongly recommended for those who have LP as it will provide an interesting baseline in comparing the two approaches.
One challenge is that the album is recorded non-stop due to the direct cut requirements, the master tape is derived from the very same performance with its own feed (explained in the links).

They have also done Vivaldi's Four Seasons as a Direct Cut (no master tape though for a comparison).

Enjoy, very interesting to see once it is out if some here will do a comparison of the direct vs tape Double LP release of the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, or even purchase the Four Seasons just for its Direct Cut approach.
Cheers

I always want to push the envelope, so decided to release the album as a double LP. [ack: the first LP is direct-cut] The second LP to be created with a twenty four track two inch Studer tape recorder, running at 30 inches per second. This we mixed down to my half inch tape, again running at 30 IPS, which became the master tape from which the second record was cut. This means that one record will be the direct cut and the second a record of exactly the same session cut from the analogue tape version. People will therefore be able to compare these two techniques from exactly the same session, the direct cut, versus the more conventional analogue mix down and mastering version of events.

Very interesting... thanks; will keep an eye on this

If you do buy the double LP when released, I would be very interested in your experience.
Fingers crossed other members are also interested.
Now we just need for another comparison is a double LP that has Direct Metal Mastering and also Lacquer Mastering :)
DMM seems to be quite popular these days with some studios.

Cheers

Did you know that LaserLight made CD's from the Crystal Clear Records Direct to Disc recordings master lacquers? Excellent sounding. Much better than the tape noisy Sheffield CD's. Sadly they are out of print but they are there. Charlie Byrd, Cal Tjader to name a couple.
