Has anyone got a clue?

My new Lampi Amber III DAC is showing distortion as the music gets louder, just at normal listening levels. It’s so bad I’ve removed from my system.

What could that be?

Lukasz did not reply. Fred the US Dealer has been helpful, thank you Fred. Especially as I purchased direct from LAMPI so I’m not technically his client. I appreciate that. I’m working on implementing his suggestion. Good news to follow I hope.

Probably the Lampi output stage is overdriving your preamp input stage and clipping it.

A cheap way to determine this is buying a pair of rca attenuator plugs from amazon just as a proof of concept. If that fixes it then you’ll either need to put a higher resistor value in the output or buy a better attenuator from Rothwell or get Lampi to reduce the output gain for you.

Great direction thank you. Simply turning the volume on the DAC reduced the DAC output and resolved the issue.
In this set up, I’m feeding an analog XLR signal to my Marantz AV8805SE/8077SE.
This issue had not arisen before and I was not expecting it.
Such an easy fix to a simple problem.
You stepping in made all the difference. Thanks. I’m grateful to you.
