Install of the update took about 3 hours going through WiFi. No issues whatsoever. Response time seems a bit faster, which is always appreciated.

My new music server is running Windows 10 and so far no issues other than getting used to the new user interface :(.

Windows 7 is another story though. Microsoft pushed out an update two days ago and caused Outlook on both my computer and my wife's to crash on displaying some images in emails! The next day they pushed another update that fixed it with no mention whatsoever of this bug. Made it a pain for a day to view the Prostudiomasters email that had the promotion code that I wanted to use!

Seems horrible to me that a bug like this made it through testing at Microsoft. When I was there we would "dogfood" the releases by running it internally before releasing it. Can't imagine them doing that this time and not catching this simple and obvious bug.

What, no, really!!! ...Yes really.

This morning I was replying to a friend's email, when suddenly out of the blue, my email page disappeared, and a blue screen appeared with Windows 10 automatically configuring itself, and saying to not turn my computer off!
What, I never asked for it, and now it was doing it without my consent! After that configuration it proceeded to download its files in my PC! ...And all by itself!

What to do what to do; I was afraid of turning my PC off in case it screwed everything. I called my computer store but they were closed. I call my neighbor who knows about computers but he was gone; today is a holiday here.
I called my Internet service provider but no assistance of that sort. I called Microsoft about six times till I finally get a nice gentleman.
By the time I was talking to him, since my email page went dead, three hours, Windows 10 was in my PC, and asking me to decline or accept.
I told the Microsoft tech what happened and I never asked for Windows 10 and it downloaded all by itself without me clicking on anything, and no date set because I don't want Windows 10. He said to click on 'Accept' and after ten minutes or more, Windows 10 is now my operating system!
I was lost with this new system, he helped me, and he was just ready to de-install it and revert to my old familiar Windows 8.1
I said wait, let's work together here @ finding my old browsers, plus few more important pages where I had to re-register again.
Together we worked roughly for 30-40 minutes, then he showed me how to recover Windows 8.1
So, right now I am testing Windows 10; it is different, and there is a learning curve to it for sure. I have one month to change my mind and revert to my old Windows 8.1
Several apps are gone but I mainly never use them. My email now has only the last 14 emails in it and all the other 250 or so are gone...forever I think!

My question: Why the heck Microsoft installed Windows 10 in my PC without my consent!!??!!

This was automatically forced on me this morning, interrupting my email communication. My neighbor and friend tried Windows 10 before (from Windows 7); it screwed up his Oulook email, and couldn't be recovered! He brought it to his computer store, and they worked two days on it trying to recover his emails but without success (all gone), and he had to pay too, of course.
After a week he hated Windows 10 and reverted to Windows 7, but his email page was gone forever. He wasn't happy @ all, I can tell you that.

I only have Windows 10 for couple hours now (even less), and I noticed I lost some speed (Internet speed). I just don't know why.
My IE browser is different, and now Edge is new and I didn't have time to check it out.
There is also Cortina which I know nothing about. There is stuff that I need time to find because it's a new design, and it's not anymore where it used to be.

This is very strange; I noticed for the last couple weeks or so unusual behavior, slowness, crashes, and now surfing around I sometimes get no page showing!
It sure changed your normal computer routine. I need more time to evaluate it fully, but right now I am certainly saddened that Microsoft did that without my consent.
How would you feel if they did that to you and your computer? Oh boy, what a day today! And they did that on a holiday.

To be continued ...

After many unsolicited offers to upgrade to W10 a similar thing happened to me a few months ago - windows suddenly started to upgrade. I think at one time I did not close the box and just told it to schedule the upgrade. It took about one hour to upgrade and find that there were no drivers for W10 my HP scanner with auto sheet feeder - it is great to scan just to the computer with a few presses at the printer screen. So I immediately reverted to W8.1 - and started to get almost daily offers to upgrade to W10. By mistake I accepted it again a few days ago, but fortunately HP has now developed W10 drivers to this scanner and I am now using W10 without any trouble.

My only concern it that I have not any physical media with the operating system - if the machine does not boot I do not have any way to repair/reinstall W10.

same here.

I kept refusing the install on my main laptop and one morning I came out and it had gone and installed Windows 10 in my sleeping laptop without asking me. so then what I did was not authorize the 'agreement' and so I was able to get it to revert back to Windows 7. and I now no longer see the pop-ups.

I have another laptop in the kitchen (for web surfing only) that I use and the same thing happened. in this case I don't use it that much and no email or important stuff so I went with it and am trying to live with it. it has screwed up a bunch of settings and I'm working my way though them to get it to be ok.

my son the network engineer at my work has over 100 stations with mostly thin clients that he manages and so far we have avoided Windows 10. until he gets into it and gives his approval I'm keeping it at arms length. it might be fine, or not.

Same here, I have a recovering Windows 8.1 on a USB stick, but none on Windows 10.
Oh, and WBF is now erratic with Windows 10 (it wasn't before, with Windows 8.1). I click on a post, or reply, and I got an empty page!
There is definitely something wrong with Windows 10 on this.
And @ other times I am completely stuck on a page; can't do anything, zip, zero, nada, ...no response in backing the page, or other navigation. Very frustrating; I just don't know how to fix it. There must be a setting somewhere, or should I do a system recovery? Like from a week ago? Will it revert to the old Windows too?
Usually when I have an issue, I delete my browsing history; cache, cookies and files. And if the issue persists, I do a system recovery, from the day before or even a week before. But now I want still to experiment with Windows 10, and fixing the issues without a recovery. This is very annoying; anyone knows how to fix the WBF navigation with Windows 10 using Google Chrome browser? ...Because I never had that type of issue in the last five years.

I had few hundred emails with files and family pictures that I never transferred in my PC, and now all those are gone! That is truly devastating!
I used my emails as a file on its own. If I would have known about that, I would have prepared myself, but Windows did it without my consent!
It's like losing your family pictures in a fire; they are gone forever! What Microsoft is thinking! They want us as slaves by destroying our most precious memories!

The value is not measurable; no amount of money in a civil action suit can ever compensate. What would you do?
This I called gross criminal negligence, a major emotional blow of grand proportion.
I had a discussion few hours ago with my friend neighbor, and was and still is very very sad about it. He tried everything to recover his emails, and paid his computer store for two days but they couldn't recover them either!

This is no good, no good @ all. Some pictures are from my grand mas, my nieces, the babies of my nieces and brothers and sisters and friends.
Plus all the other travelling ones. My email is extra important, and now Microsoft took all of that away from me, and they never asked me!
I won't swear in the forum, but in my mind I am. They simply took control of my life!

Since windows 10 came out I have updated 5 devices to Windows 10.

Two Lenovo laptops that started with Windows 8

One Dell desktop that started with Windows 8

One HP Slimline desktop that's about 7 or 8 years old that started with Windows Vista

One HP Stream 7 tablet that started with Windows 8.1

Either I am really good or really lucky as I didn't have problems with any of the devices. As its worked out I like Windows 10 and prefer using it.

The old HP Slimline that came originally with Vista (2007 or 2008 model as I recall) didn't want to update at the beginning but did eventually.

Check for Windows updates.

As I recall there were a number of updates required after I installed Windows 10.

Click on the icon with three lines in it on the lower right hand side of your desktop next to the time and date.

Go to All Settings, then click Update and Security, then click Check for Updates.

There is a chance that the files are still there, but you just can not access them. IMHO you should ask for advice of someone knowledgeable in these matters, expose him the situation and ask him to look for your information in the disk or in the mail server. Most time users do more bad than good when trying to recover lost information. Updating and installing new programs will just make thinks less clear.

Did all of that, to no avail. And then with the help of a young technician from Montreal (Internet service provider company); we did a reboot (took about ten minutes), and in one of my email addresses the old emails came back...about 200 of them. So that issue is now resolved. Thank you both.

Today has been a very challenging/learning day Windows 10 wise. ...Much more to learn, much much more as I discovered other stuff missing (audio on some files) and some new settings to get familiar with. I know that it will take some time to master a new operating system; it's normal.
And, it seems that Windows 10 got rid of some problematic applications. Also today for couple hours I lost my Internet speed, by roughly ten times! It came back and we don't know (the tech and I) why.
I'm sure that everyone on the first day of Windows 10 went through some issues of their own, and learned few things in the process. It sure is a new ride.
And I can relate to people who were used to Windows 7 for many years...very tough to break the good habit.
I too was used to all the good and bad from Windows 8.1 ... for the last two years. ...We'll see...in time.

Glad to hear that you are sorting out the issues Bob.
I switched right at the beginning with no problems and am happy with W10.
Hope the remaining issues are resolved soon.

Hi Barry,

About 30 minutes ago, I encountered my first virus since Windows 10 upgraded automatically without my approval.
I'm always embarrassed when it happens. I never remember what to do. I shut the lid, and waited few minutes, but it returned.
Then I shut down my laptop with the power button, and waited more time, but it returned.
Then I clicked on Ctlr + Alt + Delete ... few times, but the virus remained with a very annoying and loud siren plus a red flashing light, like a firetruck!
Then I was just about to throw my laptop across my lawn and get a new life! :D
And out of the blue I decided to click on "Esc". It starded fading away, my mouse was now free, and I activated my browser; the virus page went, but the siren was still on.
Then I clicked on X (top right corner) to exit my browser; the siren went down in volume then off.

This was a copy/paste execution and there was a picture in it; and when I posted my pasting that image was gone but the url address was there.
When I clicked on that url address that's when I get that virus. I deleted that url address after all of that. Lol
_______

Ok, this little incident is gone now (was very annoying), and Windows 10 has been fine. I'm going to keep it; I'm not going back to Windows 8.1
It's been what now...since I'm on Windows 10...a week or two? It's just fine; things are working, and I'm surfing. :b
Life is short, so might as well be on the latest and be happy.

You know, ...life is great. :b
Sure, there are little glitches here and there, and we love more to complain ... but it's part of life, of who we are, what we're good @. :D
I'm working on a new direction, be more me. ...A better me with all the bad and the good around. And really...the bad is only as bad as people not caring for others, misunderstanding, judging too quickly, expecting, sensitive, road blocks, sign language, deformation of words, mind fabrication, disrespect, ...tra-la-la life in its natural funny and serious formal conventions and interpretations, education, social/human values, miscommunication, timing, the walls between the clashes, the animal/human race and the history of it since the beginning of it all, the big bang.
But the people who care...the individuals, the companies, the good people; they have the true will...the maturity, the understanding, the problem solvers, the ones who turn negative into positive, the ones who make it worth looking around our beautiful blue planet...including Windows 10. Amen. :D

Stay off those porno sites - filled with viruses!!

It was a picture from a 4K TV technical article! ...From this link: http://www.techradar.com/us/news/television/ultra-hd-everything-you-need-to-know-about-4k-tv-1048954

The fourth picture; the guy with the sunglasses. Do you want the URL address? ...No I won't show you, because it was that bad!
I copied some text before and after that picture, and when I pasted it the picture showed up as a url address, and I clicked on it (wasn't sure what it was...a link within a link?)...and ...you know the rest.
And here's my post where the URL address was (but I deleted it of course): http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showt...-what-was-it-*&p=397293&viewfull=1#post397293
{You can copy and paste that 4th picture, the URL address will show instead of the picture (guy with sunglasses), then click on that url address and you'll see what I mean...if your PC is setup similar to mine...of course - but I truly don't recommend anyone to experiment with that...seriously.}

* Why, do you have some experience with porn sites?

Thanks for the update Bob.
All a bit scary but as one of my Danish colleagues says Sh** happens and you summed things up very sensibly in your post.

Its a good idea to have some security software. The free Superantispyware is not bad but Malwarebytes is worth paying for in my experience.
Glad to hear that you are happy with Windows 10. I have found it very good and easy to use.
Keep sharing all those wonderful photos you find. I always enjoy them
Best
