Silbatone does not manufacture those 16A horns. I believe they are from the guy at http://we16ahorn.blogspot.co.uk/

He does good work. In fact, they are visually cleaner than the originals, which were not really meant to be seen (they live behind a movie screen). Originals had edged that looked like they were chewed out of sheet metal.

The drawback to this setup is that tweeters are a necesity and hence the cost becomes quite high. The horn is the cheapest part! ;op

A lot of people love that 16A horn though. Not bad for a second generation speaker, one year after the first!

Depending on the room and tastes, a woofer may or may not be required. The horn will go down to 80hz more or less

Doesn't look like the rooms in those mansions are big enough for those speakers.

Hi Joe,
Bass was always the challenge even back then but an almost impossible problem today with the full range expectations.

Out of curiosity how do these 16As compare sonically to the original?

Was just talking with Tim from Paris who also makes the 12, 13, 15, 16, and 22AS, and has the 16A original. He said his favorite was the 13A. It is 1.4m wide, though it has 4 - 5m length inside the horn.

He has sold a 13A to someone in San Diego, which is close to you, ddk.

dumb question- what advantages do speakers from the 20s/30s provide? even in an appropriately-sized room, they must sound quite different from more linear, modern stuff.

I think calling WE speakers from 20/30s is a bit unfair - Kind of saying like what advantages does a medium of recording from 50s and 60s provide, when you are comparing original mastered tape to compressed mp3 format.

There is a lot of reading on Lenco Heaven and diyaudio on why these were technically better, and why Bell Labs had more money to burn on research when modern hifi is just spending on how to make something smaller and better, rather than focusing on voice - a bit like ipod compared to a huge TT. Sure ipod is progress, if your objective is convenience, but not if it is sound.

These speakers just sound real and make all other rooms in Munich sound like a joke, imo...Apparently GIP Labs, who makes the drivers, also spends tons on research and makes toys for those who consider Wilson Alexandria a corner store purchase.

Yes they sound different - just more real and more magical

Keith, its not about all vintage speakers we're talking about maybe a handful of large horns here. Descriptors aren't going do it for anyone without a reference point, its just one of those things that you need to experience for yourself in the context of a modern system.

Thanks- I'd love to hear one of these systems sometime. I know the designer of my Zus used a lot of research originally done in that time to design its modern, full range driver, loudspeaker.
