LoL

I spent $25!!!! Hahahah, I have a local guy with a barn full of tubes. Took me hours combing thru those boxes of old tubes. Founds some 6A3s, GZ34, E84L and EL84s, all kinds of ECCs and even some 2A3s. Lots of other rectis too, like the brown base Mullard GZ34 and tons of 5y3 and 5u4gs. I cleaned him out...but he does get new old stock replenishment from time to time. I will have a look again this Summer.

Oh, and he has lots of vintage vinyl as well.

Luck more than skill. Hehehe

The 2A3s were not a bargain though, as he charges market price for the audiophile "darling" tubes, ie 2a3, 300B, KT88-120, etc EL34 were more reasonable and I cleaned out all his Phillips series XF0-4 for a pal. These were rebranded Mullards.

It helps to have a vintage tube guy close by.

NOS RCA 5R4GY , JAN specification.

Possible explanation for your loving that (very high DCV voltage drop) recti is here:
http://www.tubemaze.info/sound-of-rectifier/

"5U4G (44v drop) has a smaller voltage drop compared to 5U4GB (50v drop), so you amp is running at higher voltage. But the effects on the sound is that the amp sounds softer – the sharpness on the top is less audible.

5R4 rectifier (67v drop) in the same circuit produced more transparency on the top and tighter bass.

5AR4 rectifier (17v drop), Mullard especially, has one of the smallest drops in voltage, which lead to tighter sound, but also more transparency and more speed, but warmth was sacrificed – with type 45 and 2A3 tubes that was not a desired effect."

Also check out those old Mercury filled type 80 and 83v rectis (you will need base adapters for the Lampi-cheap):

($10-20 at my local guy's place).

Lots of rolling chat here: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=129512.80

Gentlemen, so why is there such a difference in sound between PCM and DSD? Why does DSD sound smoothed over and has no jump when playing PCM?
