Within the next 2 months I'll be un-boxing all of my vinyl (approx. 3,000 LPs) as I settle in Calgary. I am using IKEA Expidit units and they'll all be next to each other, so thankfully no more looking for vinyl in other rooms. In the past I have always had my collection displayed in 3 sections - 1. Boxsets, 2. Classical, and 3. Alphabetical for everything else. I displayed by artist, and then album title and not release date (chronological order). All domestic pressings, imports and audiophile pressings were lumped together. While this has always served me well, I'm of a mind to split domestic, import and audiophile pressings.

I'd love to hear about the system you use, but please keep in mind the size of my collection.

Thanks!

John

I use CollectorZ Music Collector for all of my music. It works best for CD's as one option is to enter by barcode. Many older LP's do not have barcodes so you have the option of entering by Title and Artist. In this case it may pull up the CD and you can edit for albums or enter manually. I have all my music entered whether it is CD. LP or a download. It syncs with my iPhone (and iPad) so I always have a complete listing of my music when I am out browsing.

Thanks. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear...I meant the actual PHYSICAL display of my collection.

In no particular display order...

1) Rock, then alpha by group or performer last name
2) Jazz, then same as above
3) Country and Blue Grass, then same as above
4) Classical by label, box sets first
5) boxsets (Franklin Mints, Louisville Symphonies, Swing Era... etc.

You must have a decent collection of those genres then. I think I might only have 20 of them all total. Perhaps I could separate out my Progressive Rock bands though. Hmm?. Thanks Peter!

John,

I used to keep everything lumped together, in alphabetical order. Rock, jazz, etc.
For me, it was simple, but when people came over, and wanted to browse, it was too cumbersome (and I have about the same number of LPs that you do).
So, I think you should split the collection in genres, as much as possible, if your physical space will allow.
