I've read through several threads here, and my mind kept going back to the Harry Dean Stanton/Emilio Estevez scene in Repo Man, where Stanton says "Dress like a cop. Bad guys will think you're packing and they won't mess with you". I know that's not absolute, and I'm sure there are places it won't work, but it's a useful factor.

"Deselection" as a victim involves both appearance and demeanor. In other words, no matter how you dress, you are still considered a good victim if you're not paying attention to your surroundings, etc. Walking confidently and making eye contact heavily increase your odds of being left alone. Places you go and the time frames that you are there are also important factors. Safety in numbers is also a good rule.

Effective training in self-defense does not merely involve physical fighting skill. Concepts of personnel "management", maintenance of distance, and awareness of pre-violent cues are but a part of a global foundation for personal safety.
