Bruce,
I was wondering whether this is in your tool kit. Apparently, izotope 6 allows for what looks like a much more focused method to deal with individual instruments in the mastering process. Eg. More kickdrum impact without making everything else louder in the process. Maybe I'm misunderstanding this feature. Any comments welcome.
Michael.

Izotope has been very innovative in their plug-ins over the years and I have actually tried them a few times to see how far they have come.

As much as I'd like to, here are my thoughts.

1. I am not limited by sample rates with analog gear. Izotope is limited to 192kHz. I do use plug-ins in restoration, but they do go up to 384kHz for my DSD work.

2. I have never heard plug-ins that can equal the sound of analog gear.

3. I just like turning knobs and getting that instant gratification of the sound changing.

4. Digital plug-ins if used too aggressively can make the sound bad.

Thanks Bruce.

I've often read mastering engineers say they crush dynamics to get punchier bass. I do wonder whether this dynamic EQ could help reduce the perceived "need" to make it louder to get punchier bass.

How different is dynamic EQ to multi-band compression? One can add several bands and have them limit using different ratios, which in the end makes each band "stand out" more or less as desired when dynamics hit.
