Not for me. I hate to see a Shelby GT500 turned into a self driven car.

I'd hate these to fall into the wrong hands.

Hi

Not too far in the future (10~20) we will be looking at the joy of actually driving a car as passe as listening to an Edison Wax cylinder... The philosophical question remains: When we will have ceded all those rights or tasks to machines what/who will be watching the machines? Other machines? This is not as far as we think . Machines are already governing our lives. This Internet of Things is not a far away notion. We are already there:

Many live with their eyes glued to a smartphone
Our fridge are Wifi enabled
So are our oven
And our house
And our (so far man-driven) cars
And our boats.
We are too often ourselves Wifi enabled as we monitor ourselves with some gear (Fitbit and the likes)
And our planes?
And even our lawn mowers
Need a continue ? :)

There is a huge social benefit. We get to be able to have private transportation even when we are not able to "drive." No more unfit drivers running people over. Love to get something done as the car drivers rather than sitting there.

Wonder if they will be replaced by self-driving ones parked ready for you to pick up and go some place. Kind of like zip cars and such.

The cars will probably pick you up. You beep your RFI credit card and off you go.

I'm a total car nut, been reading car rags since age 8, and am a great driver. But I can't wait for these things to show up and take over.
Traffic is such a bear, everyone else drives distracted (or drunk) or sucks at the task. A computer is awake, responsive and always optimizing the trip.
Insurance rates will drop, travel will be quicker and less stressful.

And for real car nuts, there will be a surge of 'road tracks' that will cater to our need for control AND speed. I'm lucky to live 5 miles away from one such track, and it's incredible to be able to really push your car and yourself to the limits. Makes roads seem such a bore/chore with all the other idiots out there.

So, expect to see more automated driving happen over the next 20 to 50 years, as well as growth in private driving clubs for those that really care.
