My 2 year old Lyra Atlas with possibly 2000 + hrs has lost the diamond stylus tip. The cantilever is ram rod straight and I suspect the diamond stylus got dislodged between LPs. Totally baffling.
My query to any WBF member : how easy and/or expensive is it to get the Lyra re tipped ? Did you send the cart to your dealer or to Lyra for the repair ? I bought my cart in Singapore as there is no Lyra dealer in India.
If anyone has a mail contact for J.Carr, it would be much appreciated.
Much depressed

Hi Pradeep

Terrible news. I have had mine for over 2 years and finger crossed, no issues whatsoever.

Contact the dealer in SG and they will arrange for your cartridge to go back to Lyra so they can inspect it.
Or contact Lyra direct - Lyra@gol.com which is on their web site.

I believe their retips are rebuilds - keep body and replace everything else. Not sure on cost, But I will need to know at some stage - been too scared to ask.

Do you have a spare cart that you can use in the mean time?

Hi Shane
Many thanks. Will try both routes.
I have a Transfiguration Proteus ready for pick up at The Adelphi, SG. I am going to mount my mono cart on the Talea/TW and enjoy my mono lps. The Miyajima Premium BE normally resides on my other TT, a 401 with a 12" Ortofon arm.
I am pretty nonplussed by what happened. I had just finished playing Lyn Stanley, and before the next LP , on a whim as it were thought I would inspect the stylus with a Chinese 60x glass. When I looked through it there was no stylus tip !
Still can't get over it. There was no physical contact with the stylus...

Pradeep sorry to hear. Lyra and J Carr have always been fantastic in support...On my 5th Lyra now. I've used this email and got replies pretty quick from Jonathan connlyra@gol.com. I suspect your deal can take care of it all...

John
Many thanks. Have sent mails to JC, Lyra and the SG dealer. Fingers crossed.
Just the other day my audio buddies were saying the system is sounding divine ...

Ouch, sorry to hear about your Lyra! Would like to hear your impression of Lyra vs Transfiguration.
Never had a chance to hear Transfiguration myself and there is no local dealer here.
Would love to hear it one of these days.

Hi Suteetat
Many thanks. I had a Lyra Titan i after a Transfiguration Orpheus, and I preferred the Orpheus but by a whisker. Both are/were great carts and do have different strengths. The midrange and tonality of the Orpheus was superior while the bass, punch and attack of the Titan was better . Very different carts really. I know a few friends who have moved on from the Orpheus to the Proteus and say its a way better cart. Not sure if the Proteus is in the same league as the Atlas.
Still waiting to hear from Lyra
Cheers

Good news just heard from Lyra that the Atlas has been restored.
Completed 25hrs with the Proteus and this is an exceptional cart very different from the Atlas. The Atlas is a superb all rounder and in my 2+ years of ownership I did not find any discernible weakness. Perfect for someone like me who listens to a variety of music from classical, jazz, blues, indian, rock and occasionally pop but no RAP. The Proteus is a very well mannered and refined gent, lacks the aggression, speed and agility of the Lyra clan but its early days yet. Will probably end up mounting the Atlas on the Ortofon arm and a Garrard 401. Will make for an interesting combo with the cart alone costing a great deal more than the TT and arm.

Give the Proteus 100 hrs.

Myles Sire, you mean it actually gets better and i don't have to pay for it. Are you hinting its in the same league as the Atlas ?
Eagerly awaiting your PF review

No just that the Amorphous metal, they use seems to take forever to break in.

Can't give a lot of detail cause these designers nowadays with few exceptions like Jonathan Carr seem to like to keep their designs close to the chest.

Touch, feel and weight appears similar to the Orpheus L. Not sure about the innards. Not a huge difference in price between the Orpheus L and the Proteus. My understanding is the the gentleman who assembled the Orpheus had some health issues therefore they came up with a newer version with a new specialist to assemble/build the Proteus. I could off course be wrong.
Anyway despite my initial reservations this is a great cart and a worthy successor to the Orpheus L
Cheers
