THE Show Newport 2014.jpg

May 30th – June 1st, 2014:

T.H.E. Show at Newport Beach is quickly approaching and this year The Audio Association, Los Angeles’ premier source for audio equipment, will be exhibiting in Room 716 at the Hilton Hotel.

The Audio Association will be exhibiting the Evolution Acoustics MMMiniTwo loudspeakers along with darTZeel’s brand new all-in-one LHC-208 (amplifier / preamplifier / DSD 2X DAC). Vinyl will be spinning on the Wave Kinetics NVS Reference Turntable utilizing darTZeel’s new NHB-18NS as a phonostage. The tonearm they will use will be a brand new offering from Durand Tonearms called the Kairos which will hold the Ortofon MC-Anna Reference cartridge. Record cleaning will be done by the KLAUDiO Ultrasonic Vinyl Cleaning System. If that is not enough, ATR Services is bringing a completely reconditioned Ampex ATR-102 reel to reel tape machine along with some of the best music (Master Tapes) you will ever hear. All vibration control and isolation will be done using Wave Kinetics’ A10-U8 Component Control Systems as well as the 2NS Loudspeaker Isolation System.

This is one room you will not want to miss!

Mike,

Could an Ampex be in your future?

Please let us know what the tapes are that are played.

Mike,

no doubt the beautiful, totally stock ATR-102 in the room last night sounded remarkable. and some of the demo cuts I heard were beyond amazing. 'Bayou Country' from CCR was particularly remarkable but there were others too. the new dart NHB-108 pre was in the system used as the phono stage and the balanced input for the tape. also the new tonearm from Durand sounded great and a 'must-hear'. then there is the new dart integrated amp with dac which looked and sounded wonderful. I had to make myself leave and hit the hay at midnight.

as far as an Ampex for me; I'm pretty happy with my 2 Studer A-820's into the King Cello.....and so likely can't add another deck. 2 years ago I sold my own ATR to help fund the new MM7's and dart 458's. if I was in the market for another tape deck the ATR-102 would be head and shoulders above any other choice but an A-820. those 2 transports simply are in a class by themselves (with maybe the A80 in that same rarified neighborhood too, although I've not personally heard an A80 sound like those other 2).

here is Joel dialing in the new arm late last night. great sounding room!
