I had to post this. Went to dinner last night at Jeffrey's in Austin to celebrate my birthday with my wife, and good friends, Babybear (from our forum) and his wife. Great champagne, wine, dinner, excellent service, highly recommended, when our lovely server tells me that the restaurant plays only vinyl for the background music in the restaurant. I can't believe it so she tells Babybear. He can't believe it so while we are waiting for desserts we ask to see the record player in question. Our wives roll their eyes. She escorts us to the back of the restaurant and shows us a Technics TT sitting on a sturdy table spinning Minnie Ripperton. The cover is closed so nothing knocks the arm out of the grove. On a shelf above is a small stack of LPs that she told us gets changed every night. Very varied selections. When one LP runs out, the first server to notice picks something else and puts it on. The reason they use vinyl ? She said, "It just sounds better". Quick, someone call Michael Fremer! You can't make this stuff up. I got to choose the next record as it was my birthday celebration albeit a week early. My pick: Beatles, Hard Days Night, on Parlaphone.

Love it. I cannot tell you how many Deep House DJs I have spoken to over the years...uniformly, 'vinyl sound better'. Some of the best underground clubs still drop the diamond needle.

It happened something similar to me at an Acapulco restaurant (El Olvido) where I noticed an above average ambience sound, I left the table with a good excuse and asked for the manager who walked me to the system room - McIntosh Rack and NHT speakers all over the place with selected areas for subwoofers! I was not allowed to take pictures but the manager told me that one of the owners really liked good music!

I always wondered why top tier restaurants- especially given they're aiming for the ultimate dining experience- install such shitty sound systems.

How about less than top-tier restaurants that pay for a music service that is so cheap they don't get the original versions of the songs sung by the original artists? You get some crummy renditions of famous songs blaring in the background. Think Outback Steakhouse for example.

Such a common occurrence in Japan, especially coffee shops and bars. I have yet to come across any back home in Australia.
