A/V v's 2-Channel...........any debate left to be had?

The February 14, 2010 headline reads....................

McIntosh Launches New HDMI 1.3 AV Preamp - MX150
http://hometheaterreview.com/mcintosh-launches-new-hdmi-13-av-preamp---mx150/
McIntosh just announced the availability of its high-performance MX150 A/V Control Center (SRP: $12,000).

For 12k you can get a nice $6,000 pre-amp and a nice $6,000 AV Processor, so the question one must ask is; can this one box (the 1.3) perform equally or perhaps even be a better value?

Based on my limited experience the AV units in general don't lack clarity, however they seem to be sluggish and lack the rhythm, tempo and speed of a good 2-channel set-up. At least that was my experience several years ago with just one AV component in the line, a DVD/CD player (by McIntosh).

Are we still better off with two separate systems after +25 years of living with A/V in our homes?

I mean that is a quarter century and still the need for segregation?
